We have a #MinCup25 champion!!

Congratulations, #Kyanite!

After eight years of competing, another few hours to verify votes was nothing, right?

Amazing first run, #Tugtupite, and better luck next year.

Incredibly close! Vote for #kyanite please - it’s an awesome P-T indicator mineral, with all its pseudomorphs (if you are so inclined). Thank you!

Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...

Preliminary images from the most powerful Earth radar satellite ever launched offer a tantalizing glimpse of the science the mission will be able to deliver.

⚒️ 🧪 Were you one of the tens of thousands in the Bay Area woken up by the M4.3 earthquake last night? The earthquake occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs along the east side of the valley.

Learn more about what we know, and don't know, about the Hayward Fault and its seismic hazard:

HayWired scenario depicts a scientifically plausible M 7 scenario earthquake on the Hayward Fault. USGS, CGS, Berkeley, EERI, CA-SSC and many other partners collaborated on a series of reports and a short video. Be prepared! Links to diverse products may be found here: www.usgs.gov/programs/sci...

At 2:56 AM a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred near Berkeley, CA. The earthquake location is close to the Hayward fault. This earthquake generated light shaking across the Bay Area. The CGS continues to monitor the situation. www.conservation.ca.gov/cgs
Map of the San Francisco Bay area that shows the locations of strong motion stations which are marked by triangles. The colors on the map represent different levels of shaking with purples being weak shaking, blues being light shaking and green being moderate shaking.

Geologists Dorothy and Keith Stoffel, with pilot Bruce Judson, make a final pass over Mount St. Helens. A M5.1 quake strikes. Ice and rock collapse into the crater.

Below them, the north face heaves—then gives way. The largest landslide in recorded history begins.

Today’s M7.4 aftershock of the Kamchatka #earthquake was located in the Northern section of the mainshock rupture, where most aftershocks (in pink/purple) and foreshocks occurred. This event was also an interface thrust earthquake, but slip was concentrated at a greater depth. ⚒️🧪

Ever seen a “volnado” before?

Check out this video from USGS of a whirlwind kicking up loose ash deposits along the active fountain and flow within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater of Kilauea!

According to USGS, these whirlwinds have been documented during several eruptive episodes downwind of the eruption

How does lava sound when it comes to the surface of the Earth? Listen to a lava flow oozing out of its effusive vent high on the southwestern side of #Etna, 28 August 2025. That day no visits by tourists were allowed on the site, which permitted this (relatively) clean recording
