Hey Australia,

A new, updated, covid vaccine booster is available. Targets LP.8.1.

If you're a healthy adult and haven't had a booster in over 12 months you should get this.

Covid is still around. It's not innocuous. If you have a flu shot every year then it's not hard to get this too.

Sam Altman: hey I made a machine that stole literally all your stuff in order to make CSAM of your child actors, sometimes it encourages people to kill themselves

Disney: Holy shit here's a billion dollars

Altman: the machine loses more than that each week but thank you. Soon it will become god.

It has also been terrible for consumers, which we used to call audiences
Opinion: Netflix did not invent the world of streaming, but it is the most successful operator in this new dispensation. However, it remains to be seen whether its success in knowing what its customers want to watch can be matched by an enduring ecosystem for creative talent. on.ft.com/48FvQul

Stories like this, where a few uneducated guys walk into a room with nothing and walk out having recorded a song that will burrow into the global subconscious and stay there, is the opposite of everything those AI guys think about creativity. It IS creativity.

@cinenerdle2.app I’m pretty exhausted, and for a good twenty seconds I genuinely thought you’d totally botched the spelling of Ana de Armas.

I only listen to AI summaries of music now. It's so much more efficient than being swept away by my favourite tunes.

If there’s a better way to unwind after a long day, I’d actually quite like to know about it.

The first playwright I properly studied (after Shakespeare) was Tom Stoppard. When I went to New York the first thing I did was buy a ticket to Leopoldstadt on Broadway, unable to believe that you could simply go see a new work from an old master. It was glorious. Vale to one of the all-time greats.

The best way to save society is for us all to collectively pretend that Elon is funny.
Everything about this might be the saddest thing I’ve ever seen

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

You don’t get to name your kid X Æ A-12 and then say “or whatever his name is” about anyone else.
Elon Musk endorses Cuomo for mayor of New York and makes sure to add some racism in there: “…Mumdumi or whatever his name is.”

Five years ago you could search: "when did the saxophone become an indication of sexy times in film" and you'd get somebody's well-researched article.

Now it's like "sex was invented by the ancient Sumerians as a way to fight ghosts, which they used to brew beer." (search instead for "saxophone?")

Diane Ladd, RIP

Here she is on the set of Inland Empire with her daughter, Laura Dern, talking about how many great directors she's worked with in her career. Lynch's return volley is of course wonderful as well. We lost them both this year. Legends!

The only truly ethical response that a self-described artist can make. Anything else is a betrayal of one's colleagues.
“I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I'm 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak. ... The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I'd rather die.’” 🫡
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says 'I'd rather die' than use generative AI
Del Toro's new Frankenstein adaption reimagines Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel. Frankenstein was like a tech bro: "creating something without considering the consequences," he explains.

The thing is, the people who want AI art want their own AI art and not others. They want the allure of being an ‘artist’, but if it came to paying money to see somebody else’s they wouldn’t waste their money. They better learn this quick.
Greatest parallel I can think of for the AI vs Art situation: there was barely anyone at the AI festival while a screening of DR. STRANGELOVE was completely sold out. People want real art made by real people.
Having to walk past an AI International Film And Music Video Awards Festival is giving me psychic damage.
