It’s such a common story - people turn out because they’re furious about a specific thing, the.. let’s say.. ineffective people who have been protesting nonstop for 20 years think “This is it! The revolution!”, they rant about imperialism et al, and then the first crowd leaves, disillusioned
You could see it happen in real time during the Free DC protests this summer. Other groups would come in en masse, taking up as much space as they could (physical and sound). Some people who showed up to protest the thing they were mad about rolled their eyes and wandered off.
