Yesterday I deleted my personal Facebook and Instagram accounts. I messaged a friend to say I was doing so and to get me via text if they needed me. Their response was that me doing so was meaningless in the whole scheme of things. That may be true but it's not meaningless to me. 1/3

I honestly think we are experiencing the end of the internet as those of us born in the 20th c understand it. Smaller, siloed communities like discord servers and newsletters will persist, but the idea of the global public square is dead, as is “the information superhighway.” VCs killed it.
it genuinely sucks that basically nothing on the internet works well anymore. search? barely works. social media? filled with garbage engagement-bait designed to game the algorithm. news websites? pages that refresh at random or so covered in video ads that it’s impossible to read stories

I used to think that when global warming truly began to bite, deniers would face reality & we could act. Now I think it's more likely it will lead to a kind of fascism that will respond to global warming by, like, executing everyone who says global warming is real.

Meta literally created a LGBTQ exception for calling someone mentally ill as an insult. You can't do it for any other group except LGBTQ people.

I think the difference between actual search engines and ChatGPT is that one presents you with a sampling of info you can filter and triangulate, whereas the other spoon-feeds you a single, quite possibly wildly inaccurate answer
I firmly believe we can culturally make it *incredibly fucking embarrassing* to admit you asked ChatGPT something because actually using your brain to find real information was just too hard
Every time someone says they used chatgpt to find some info, they're actually telling you that they have never been punched hard in the face.
