the correct way to understand the protest opsec stuff is that its a shibboleth for guys who attend left wing protests regularly that lets them exert status over recruits. i would regard it as pretty benign if these people werent actively discouraging people from getting involved.

The unfortunate trend we’re seeing is the emergence of ultra-paranoid opsec culture obsessed with controlling who is listening to and talking about rapid response, as if it’s a guerilla network. It isn’t, it has never been, it never could be. This paranoia will ruin the system if left to run amok

Without the press being there and observing in the Twin Cities, those stories wouldn’t be getting told and the current Congressional pushback against ICE, such as it is, wouldn’t be happening. Will is right and his critics are wrong.
The local rapid response policy, which I first learned today when I was permanently removed, is “No press allowed ever.” I just think this is incredibly short-sighted and almost intrinsically self-defeating. Who are we observing FOR?

Guys the formal training for rapid response says you should always bring your phone and ID, making you trivially easy to identify. (You need your phone to film anyway.) The idea that the goal is to remain anonymous is actually not best practices at all, it’s like a weird inherited social practice

The purpose of doing to protests is to get photographed and videotaped loudly expressing your disapproval, and to accept some risk of your very publicly getting brutalized and your broadcast suffering becoming a symbol of the cause.
That is the most concrete effect of a protest.

As a baseline, you should assume that any time you go to any action, you are being photographed and it will take an extremely minimal amount of work by some nerd at a desk to put together who you are if you ever do anything that raises a flag.
