A few months ago, ICE hired me

I didn't sign and submit any paperwork. I almost certainly failed the drug test. I'm real outspoken about my opposition to the Trump administration, and I am extremely googlable

And yet, there it was, in plain English. "Welcome to ICE!"

My latest for Slate
You’ve Heard About Who ICE Is Recruiting. The Truth Is Far Worse. I’m the Proof.
What happens when you do minimal screening before hiring agents, arming them, and sending them into the streets? We're all finding out.

And my second caveat in response to a lot of responses—this isn’t an argument that men being lonely isn’t happening. This is an argument that loneliness is not exclusive to men and that the reigning discourse around MALE loneliness is really about unmet expectations for women

I, too, am sick of hearing about Olivia Nuzzi and Ryan Lizza. But that's a side effect of one of the little-examined parts of this story: the medium itself. The incentive structure of newsletters has helped propel journalism into its YouTube drama channel era.

Statehood for D.C. is an ethical obligation at this point, required to protect the rights of our residents to govern ourselves against such out-of-state troops being sent to patrol our city.
NEW: Republican-led states, in a new filing at the D.C. Circuit, say D.C. residents are irrelevant, D.C. belongs to everyone else. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The filing is led by the South Carolina and West Virginia attorneys general. Both states sent troops to DC.

Thank God it’s finally safe to be at the National Mall in broad daylight. Perhaps next they can clean up the crime-ridden hallways of the Portrait Gallery.

I actually have a lot of design anger about this & I do think it's a design choice - polish over clarity isn't an uncommon design choice, but it's a bad one

couple that with the chat interface (more design) & the handwaving about "intelligence" & at this scale it amounts to an epic public deception
I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future.

But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

The goal isn’t transparency—it’s to break trust in institutions while claiming to expose corruption. People making baseless claims set themselves up as the “heroes” fixing the “problems”.

Musk & friends have a saying “We are the media now.” But that’s not really it.

They are the government now.

When moms “research the baby stroller” they’re researching what best fits their car/home/lifestyle, because they’re starting from a BASELINE that the @cpsc.gov has already done the work to eliminate the strollers that will, like, collapse on their own or sever someone’s finger.
4/ He promotes what sociologists call "intensive parenting," as a superior way to ensure kids are safe. That's a time/labor-intensive & stressful form of parenting many US *mothers* feel pressured to follow due to cultural norms/expectations around mothers as primary caregivers.
