Been thinking a lot about this, and I've reached the conclusion that calling Tolkien a principled conservative is a bit unfair on him. I think the correct label is traditionalist and conservationist, with a tendency toward reaction.
It might seem like splitting hairs, but his works had empathy.

I FOUND THE BOOK WITH THE ORB
I was burned by believing that Obama might just be the real thing before he was elected. But damn, do I really, really want to believe Zohran is...
The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker.
And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows.
No more.

There is no higher praise, is there?
I have written something in a creative, narrative, non-work sense for the first time in damn near 20 years because your writing was so effective at helping me remember how much I enjoy prose when I can find the brain for it!
Its four or so paragraphs and super niche, but it's something written!

Funny I'm called an inspiring writer, because I can't for the life of me find the words to say how deeply this touches me.
This might sound twee or glib, but I really do look up to the indie writers on here, just like YOU, person-whom-I-follow, who are working very hard to put their creations out into the world. Like @ljamberfantasy.com working hard to support TEWWBAD.
I admire that grit; it inspires me to be brave…

My leaked texts would reveal dozens of authors writing in barely comprehensible gibberish riddled with emojis, periodically interrupted by excerpts of pristinely written, highly readable works in progress.
My leaked texts would reveal thousands of messages by grown ass adults, several of them highly trained logistics specialists, failing to successfully coordinate brunch.
if all my group chats were leaked tomorrow I don't know that I could say for certain that my career would necessarily retain the trajectory it's currently on, but I will say I'm pretty sure I've never mentioned Hitler in any of them, so at least that's something

If everyone under 35 treated anyone older than them as time travellers from the past (which they are), and everyone 35 or older behaved as though they're visiting the future (which they are), the world would probably be a happier place.

Never will it cease to be obscene that the arts funding available from Creative Scotland is not available for "profit-driven activities."
Rather than incubating artists to create ongoing revenue, it's keeping artists hand-to-mouth, chasing funding.
Utterly self-defeating.

I challenge the methodology in this chart b/c there is nothing to distinguish online dating via mobile app (demeaning, soul-draining, numbers game wherein profit is leeched from your suffering) vs online dating via flirting in the DMs (principled, skill-based, derived from human traditions of rizz)
The reason people do NOT opt out of online dating, despite its engineered horrors, is because increasingly it's the only dating. Period.

They still do.
authors need to start beefing with each other via long-winded letters & essays published in "serious" magazines again

Can someone explain why all the super rich appear to be really fucking stupid? Are they just all destroying their brains with drugs or what?
Anyone with half a brain can look at this 'plutonomy' shit and see it ends in violent revolution, but they're throwing their status away to achieve... what?

Increasingly I'm of the opinion that intelligence is useless without the confidence to say "I can figure this out for myself," the patience to review the subject carefully, the security to be willing to try and fail, and the determination to then try again.
