I just saw someone yell “they’re just using it to generate ideas!”

And

I hate to say it

But if you work in the ART DEPARTMENT and you need a death machine stuffed with your colleagues’ work to give you ideas

Quit.

My heart hurts. The world has lost a voice laced with kindness. His films formed me. It is truly inconceivable.

PSA...

Autism isn't a choice.

If someone's autism causes them to do things that annoy you, it's not because they *want* to annoy you or don't care that they are (if they're even aware of it in the first place).

It's because they have a literal disability.

Hear me out… an AC/DC night at Dancing With the stars… it’s opens with “We’ve got Balls” and someone does a Paso to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Who knows someone!?

I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

Working on this!
One of the cruelest tricks society played on creative people was planting the idea that being proud of your work is somehow unseemly and egotistical.

You made a thing! You like it! You SHOULD be proud of it. Brag all you want!

So I don’t have a bottle on ice like I did for the last year of Kissinger’s life… I’ll have to go out and get one… Dick Cheney is dead. Another evil old man is gone from this world and that’s a Good Thing.

So perimenopause and AuDHD is a heady combination. Meltdown yesterday because my mom overwatered some plants. “You kill plants by overwatering like it’s a personality trait!” Not my finest moment… but seriously leave my plant babies alone!!!!

Making my silly little pots, trying to bring a little joy into the world.
Remember, no matter how small the gesture, no matter how little the donation, every tiny bit of light you put out into the world brightens it just a little bit. Shit's pretty dark these days. Much love to every one of you trying to brighten it.

Things that actually cause autism:

1. Autistic folks boinking and making new autistic folks whether or not they have a diagnosis.
2. See number one.
Things that cause autism, per RFK jr:

1. Tylenol
2. Circumcision
3. Holiday sweaters
4. Seattle sports fandom
5. Oscar-watch parties
6. Ketchup on hot dogs
7. Visiting Brooklyn
8. Dental brush picks
9. Greta Gerwig films
10. Hummus

Stay tuned, more super-scientific studies forthcoming…

All I can do is think happy thoughts that Dolly is okay. She’s the best of us.

I’m the second… but it’s slimy things like okra that trip my sense up.
I love that neurodivergence-related food issues range all the way from "I can only eat buttered noodles" to "I love trying new stuff, the weirder the better, but fuck anything that's the consistency of yogurt".

It breaks my heart that there's such a divide within the autistic community between late diagnosed lower support needs autistic adults and parents of higher support needs autistic children.

The divide is costing us more than it's helping us. We are all losing ground because of it.

I don't know who needs to see this, but... autism is a disability because it limits our abilities... not because it removes them.

Also, disability is not a bad word. It's a descriptive one.

Autism is a disability not a disease.

Autism is a disability not a disease.

Autism is a DISABILITY not a disease.

You can't cure a disability.

We need SUPPORTS. Not to be treated like we have the plague. 🤦‍♀️

Yep… folks upset about Tylenol but not freaking out about ABA or anti-vaxxers.
i'm starting to realize that one of the reasons I'm so mad about the Tylenol thing is that people I've never seen mention any reality check on vaccines are suddenly UP IN ARMS

says to me that the anti-vax rhetoric is so deeply steeped in our country that a proven fraud remains truth to many people

I wish more people understood that not all autism is visible, but all autism is disabling.

If you don't see it, it's because we're actively hiding it. (Not for us, for others.)

But hiding our autism means our needs are also invisible. And unmet needs = inner turmoil. 😣

If my writing about autism does anything, whether it be in my books, my columns or my reported stories, I hope it advances the idea that autistic people are whole human beings as they are with legitimate needs and inner lives that deserve to be told the same as other stories.

Autism is hereditary but that’s to simple and doesn’t give people a scapegoat to blame. If you have an autistic kid it is very likely that you are autistic yourself. One of my ancestors invented a font… A FONT!!! (It’s Baskerville if you’re curious.)
If, like me, you are a mother who took tylenol at some point during pregnancy and have a child with neurodivergency, please remember during any fake science announcements today that fake science doesn’t become more real just when it’s directed at our most vulnerable pressure points. 💙
