I think the article misses that the fear of the decline of civilization and the desire to save one's home (or, as fascists see it, one's nation) from enemies is really at the core of fascism, at least if you follow Griffin's fascist minimum ("palingenetic ultranationalism").
„[Fantasy] sublimates a dread of being determined by society’s impersonal structures and a wish for our own choices and values to shape the world around us. It reflects a desire for control, power, and a transparent mechanism from individual choice to social effect.“
Why is the right so fascinated with fantasy literature?
Society inevitably structures our choices but the resulting frustration feeds a yearning for magical rings

Great piece but missing something, I feel: progressives need to better understand the MAGA mindset not primarily so we can "strategize" more effectively, but as a way to engage our own blind spots (our attachment to the institutions that gave rise to Trump).

This hints at the two main streams of thought on (generic) fascism: fascism as a regime (although this usually looks at what fascists did) and fascism as an ideology (what did fascists say and think). Of course this only applies to the question of what fascism is in the first place, but it's 1/2
The debate over whether this is 'fascism' is a silly semantic one in which a small minority mean 'completed fascist authoritarianism' and the vast majority mean 'the people in power say and do things that demonstrate completed fascist authoritarianism is what they want to achieve.'
