So as someone who has written a LOT about black bears in particular...

This article is incorrect, they DO have collarbones.

Just the collarbones aren't hard connected to the sternum like ours are, they're freefloating which makes their shoulders collapsible like mice or rats.

I talk a lot about AI and "male loneliness" as a lack of distress tolerance for the messy business of dealing with other humans, but the rejection (most noticeable in MAGAts and anti-vaxxers, but spreading to, sigh, everything) of the *idea of expertise* is a symptom of the same problem. (thread)
I hate the whole "listen to every day Americans instead of educated elites" crap but at the same time I do think we sometimes fail to acknowledge that a lot of the academic elites are actually full of shit too. There are plenty of PhDs out there who believe false and damaging shit.

For Americans, Dick Clark was the personification of all the preceding year’s misfortunes and sorrows.
Each year a Dick Clark was chosen to be feasted and feted for the final week of December, until being sealed inside a ball by temple attendants for the sacrifice on the night of the 31st.

they put a clause in the fucking constitution about postal service, that’s how important it is

nothing in there about “only if you can make money on it”

It could cost USPS more than *$6 billion* a year in lost revenue, and lead Amazon to dominate yet another facet of the economy.

If you're feeling down or despairing about what FEELS like technology/advancement/science "standing still" or being fully malicious, I have great news: You're not paying attention to actual science. Just tech industry marketing.
meanwhile.... medicine has taken INSANE leaps and bounds in the last 2 years.
we're out here curing HIV and leukemia and creating 100% efficacy vaccines against all sorts of cancers, and now this??

between this and renewable energy outstripping fossil fuels in efficiency, the future is bright

There's a repeated problem - that good news doesn't feel like news, because it's not a single moment of upheaval the same way all the bad news is.

Good things happen because people build them, step by step, until things are simply different than they were before.
