I hate modem documentaries. I hate the 2.5 minute pitch at the start, I hate the recaps, I hate the Music of Rising Tension that triggers anxiety, I hate the way they presume you're stupid and the presenter pretends they're stupid too. The pitch alone - no trust you'll follow them in. Miserable.

Before whatever is about to happen happens: There will be a lot of reporting and commentary about executive orders. Much of that reporting, at least initially, will regurgitate what the White House *says* the orders do as opposed to what they can *actually* do based on the text and controlling law.

The British people on Blue Sky who lived through Classic Dom watching the world catch up to what a bunch of LARPers can do when they get hold of the levers of government.
One thing that can get lost in all this is that Jeff Goldberg knows much, much more about national security than the principals who were on that text chain.

I have studied the United States for close to a quarter century and I still can't quite fathom how the news from there is evenly split between something I expected to hear about Russia in 2009 and scenes that were cut from Idiocracy for being too extreme.

It's terrifying.

The thing about Nazis is that they aren’t shitty people because they’re Nazis: they’re Nazis because they’re shitty people

It’s the perfect ideology for stupid, cruel, incurious people who are angry that they are not treated with worshipful respect despite having no meaningful accomplishments

Republicans’ SAVE act would not even accept marriage certificates for name changes. You’d have to have a passport and good luck getting the State Department’s depleted workforce issuing you one
As predicted, women in New Hampshire had a hard time voting yesterday because of the new proof of citizenship law:

“It doesn’t have my married name on it,” she said. Town voting officials then sent her away a second time, to get her marriage certificate.

NH’s new ID requirements send some would-be voters home to grab passports, birth certificates
The law requires all new voters to show proof of their U.S. citizenship. For some, that meant making multiple trips to and from the polls before finally casting a ballot on Tuesday.

You have to hand it to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, he knows exactly how to handle Trump.

The US President responds to shiny objects, and to things that move. Watch Trump transform here, from apathetic boredom, to awe; and how he warms to the idea of keeping the shiny, moving thing.

All voters look for showmanship, guts, and a sense that this candidate is fighting for YOU. I’m not sure why some Dem politicians think “we find acceptable middle ground with feudalists” is a better pitch
We are 18 months out from an election. Now is the time to (1) shore up the base, who *is* paying attention & is fucking furious, and (2) build the narrative playing field we want to be working on in September 2026. Stop playing scared.

Without question, the central feature of Trump’s tariff policy.
Conversely, I suspect one of the things Trump finds most attractive about tariffs is that the CEOs and Chairman of vastly more succesful companies than his have to come grovelling to him for exemptions that he can grant or withhold without any process, oversight, or transparency.
One of many problems with tariff policy is that big businesses have a direct phone line to Trump, he can dole out exemptions as favors or withhold them as extortion, meanwhile small businesses/consumers just have to bare the costs of all this.
