Good thing there aren’t active cases of TB and measles in the state/community. This is a disservice to public health and will likely cost far more than the lost budget.
Jackson County Public Health (Kansas City) said it lost $1.1 million it had been expecting from federal funding streams. As a result, the health department immediately laid off three employees who worked on monitoring communicable disease outbreaks in local schools.

USFWS is proposing to list monarchs as threatened under the endangered species act.
The problem is it wouldn’t prohibit the removal of milkweed - the only plants where monarchs lay their eggs.

A little thread: Science is defiantly anti-fascist because it pursues truth, is necessarily collaborative, and relies on open communication. And because its falsifiability is incompatible with the cultism, faith-based belief systems, disinformation, and propaganda of Christian nationalism.

I love the large library system in my former home of KC, MO, because they could access almost everything. Having moved to the much smaller MHK, there is joy and surprise in what I’m able to find in the smaller library here.
I’m a public librarian in a degenerating democracy, and I am pleading: Care about your library. Use it. See what programs and events it offers. And pay attention to its governing body. See who the trustees are. Consider running yourself. Libraries will need all the community support they can get. 📚

The first Trump administration eviscerated science in the federal government at the EPA, NOAA, and elsewhere, and brought in deep climate deniers. It took 4 years of the Biden administration to rebuild science at the federal level and now it's going to be gutted again. Stand up for science.
