i've found family burial records through my mom's side that date back to the 1600s in the "U.S." - doesn't make me any more special than anyone else. it means i'm a modern beneficiary of the imperialistic/genocidal legacy of my ancestors. People whose great^10 g-dad founded Hartford, CT can shut up.

This. Not retaining the data has long been a standard practice. The danger is when governing boards or governmental bodies try to change that policy, as I’m sure many are seeking to do. Serious Big Brother stuff.
