While royalties might seem like great passive income, apparently you can make $400/year w/10k in high yield savings account (I know, who can afford for that much money to just...sit). But considering that's more than I make in royalties on my first 3 books now, the comparison is depressing.

2025 comes to an end.

It’s been a strong year for deployment and innovation, but a worrying one for energy politics.

Moves like the US pause on offshore wind show how quickly progress can be undermined by polarised debate.

Here’s hoping 2026 brings calmer, more evidence-based energy policymaking.

High praise for Japan and a decent attempt to explain its surging popularity around the world. I particularly liked his insight that foreigners prefer Japan’s cities to its countryside - and why that might be. Highly recommended.

I think most of us know where this is heading. With a failing POTUS aligning with Russia, an out of control drunken defense secretary, both destroying everything around them, makes for some very uneasy feelings.

A lot of this discourse seems to settle on “voters don’t need motivation to vote, they just need to show up every time.” Which seems insane and ahistorical.

Democracy doesn’t fail because people vote.
It fails when voters are misled, choices are distorted, and accountability disappears afterwards — then we’re told this is what democracy looks like.
