Oh hey, a new influx of people to BlueSky.

I'm a screenwriter and movie producer based in Toronto, Canada. I mostly use this space to goof off about movies, politics, and technology, spiced up with the occasional trenchant insight.
What people who talk about GenAI writing don't get is that ideas don't just pop into your head fully-formed. Rethinking and rewriting is like sanding wood. Miserable work until, in an instant, you realize you've got this beautiful thing you've made in your hands. It's the best feeling there is.

There is a genuine use case for LLMs and the like, usually in science and pattern recognition stuff. We need to really differentiate that from the digital asbestos being forced into everything. Even referring to it as "AI" only helps them normalise it. We should start calling it GS - Generated Slop.

Something I genuinely love about Pluribus is it perfectly matches the pace of me and the lady friend commenting without missing plot points.

Watching the drone garbage gag together as we mutually narrated was absolute joy.

Visual punchline of the year if not for Eddington.
I understand that some people think Pluribus is too slow (honestly, welcome to Vince Gilligan) but I cannot overstate how much I am enjoying the detective adventures of the world's grouchiest lesbian
pluribus is the only show brave enough to ask if one mean lesbian could save the world

In lieu of elaborate means-tested standards or onerous top-down management, my proposal is simple: no one who is more famous than Druski is allowed to be in TV commercials. Druski's fine, I have no quarrel with him. Puddy from Seinfeld is probably below Druski now, he can stay. Chris Pratt must go.

“Strong Floor, No Ceiling” is a good concise pitch in red districts you’re trying to win over, but it falls short as an inspiring national vision.

I love so so many moments in Southland Tales, but SMG’s invocation of this song is one of the best.
Elton releases “Levon” 54 yrs ago today.

“I wasn’t writing about a literal man,” said lyricist Bernie Taupin. It’s a portrait of someone “born into something he didn’t choose — carrying the weight of it, trying very hard to preserve dignity in the middle of a world that’s already moving beyond him”

I would film so many car crashes and explosions (in a safe and controlled fashion, of course).

I’d make Michael Bay look like a kid with a sparkler.
if i was in a pluribus situation,
i'd film one hell of a movie, and the hivemind would love it lest they incur my wrath

I had this experience for the first time the other night and it was really unpleasantly jarring.
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Technology knowers: is there something going on with RTX 4090s at the moment? I've got the computer store I bought mine from on release asking if they can give me a brand new 5090 in exchange for my 4090 as a straight exchange.

I don’t get it, why does making art become unsatisfying when you remove the part where your brain works and is rewarded with a sense of accomplishment

Ahead of launching a war on Venezuela, the US would like to announce that no one in Venezuela should help US forces, it'd be stupid to do so, the US will denigrate you and screw you over no matter how much you help, and blame you if even one Venezuelan who also helped the US ever does something bad.

You gotta imagine shoestring budgets could go so much farther today.

It's cool that so many Hollywood productions shoot in Toronto but it'd be nice if there was a balancing of tax credits so that more up and comers could get their shot.
Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art

Reporting from Boston papers makes it seem very plausible that Trump's Press Secretary had his paramilitary detain the mother of her nephew, because she was no longer romantically involved with her brother and he wanted her out of the picture.
“After Ferreira was detained, Dos Santos Rodrigues said Michael Leavitt Sr. and his father, Bob Leavitt, reached out to her.”

“‘They just kept saying, ‘Tell her to self-deport,’” she recalled. “Self-deport to where? Brazil is not her home.’” www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/26/m...

“OpenAI’s court filing argued that the harms in this case were at least partly caused by Raine’s ‘failure to heed warnings, obtain help, or otherwise exercise reasonable care,’ as well as the ‘failure of others to respond to his obvious signs of distress.’”
