Oh hey, a new influx of people to BlueSky.

I'm a screenwriter and movie producer based in Toronto, Canada. I mostly use this space to goof off about movies, politics, and technology, spiced up with the occasional trenchant insight.
15 years after I say yes to the corpo opportunity that makes the movie stuff possible, the next big level up arrives. Ain't that a thing.

Thrilled to see people enjoying Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie as much as I did. I knew this would be something special. Beyond proud of the team.

They murdered a 7 year old kid, and I hope that kid is there to watch St. Peter flush every self-proclaimed Good Christian who voted for this straight to hell.
CBP didn’t give her or anyone any water; she asked 3 times accg to other reports. CBP killed a 7yr old.

“8 hours after the girl & her father were taken into custody, she began having seizures & her body temperature was measured at 105.7 degrees by emergency medical technicians. shorturl.at/d2OTJ

The girl's death underscores the crisis precipitated by large groups of families seeking asylum where there are inadequate facilities to detain them.

Watching X-Country Skiing and it just seems like a nice time. I got into it in high school, never returned.

Maybe next winter.

What puzzles me in this is why 20 GOP senators can’t say “yeah, she’s gotta go, we gotta impeach.”

Even if you default to party loyalty, what purpose does propping her up serve? You can’t find someone who’s less of a fucking embarrassment to the profession than Pam Bondi? Really?
Likely-historic photo by NBC News of all the Epstein victims asked to raise their hands if they've not yet been asked to meet with the DOJ as Bondi testifies in foreground

Walked past Guillermo Del Toro carrying a box of Mandarin oranges on Spadina.
what is YOUR most mundane celebrity encounter?

I walked past Alex Trebek at the MSP airport. Our eyes met, and the look he gave me said, "Don't you dare try to talk to me." So, I just kept walking.
what is YOUR most mundane celebrity encounter?

Fighting with Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss over some on-sale towels at the old Broadway department store in Century City, circa 1980. (I won. No blows were landed.)

That’s gotta be inconvenient for the thousands of people who fly into/out of El Paso on any given day.

How did no one choose Two Princes by the Spin Doctors.

Seriously. Picture an ice dance routine to that song. It TOTALLY works, right?
Here is the Czech pair dancing to their AI rip-off of You Get What You Give, replaced for the Olympics by an AI song with “original” lyrics that sounds pretty much the same

A fun sidequest in my startup days was when an exec learned I did standup as a hobby. They asked me to start punching up the speeches they'd give it at all hands meetings.

An absolute delight to work with - never shot an idea down, gifted timing/delivery. Presentation skills will boost your career.

It is absolutely mind-boggling to me that we have seen so many “experts” on the far right and authoritarianism try to make the claim that these are not death camps in concentration camps when the reality is, they are both.
"A modern-day concentration camp ... People have been killed by the staff here." Irish citizen Seamus Culleton has been in ICE detention since September, despite having a valid work permit and his own business in the US.

"If the government may simply seize *someone* without due process, there is no check on its ability to seize *anyone*."

Perhaps the most fundamental check against tyranny. And it is gravely threatened.
BONUS RULING: Judge Thomas Johnston, a George W. Bush appoiintee in West Virginia, used a recent ruling to warn of the dangers of defying due process for immigrants because of what it could also mean for Americans. It's worth a read.

A hypothesis I had over the last year was that a lot of businesses struggling under tariffs would at least ride out the holiday shopping season hopeful that they could make it work. Tomorrow's jobs report will be the first credible look at what a post-holiday layoff cycle looks like under Trump II.
Peter Navarro: "The jobs report comes out tomorrow. We have to revise our expectations down significantly for what a monthly job number should look like ... Wall Street has to adjust for the fact that we're deporting millions of illegals out of the job market."

If Barbenheimer counts... it's Barbenheimer.
What 2020s movie has the greatest cultural footprint?

Note: This is not necessarily about box office, Oscars, critical acclaim, though all of those can count. It's more... pieces of it have so completely permeated our cultural groundwater that it will always be there.
