According to Dr. Google's AI mentor, the following severance packages were paid to fired college football coaches this year:
Jimbo Fisher (Texas A&M): Record $76M+.
Brian Kelly (LSU): Around $54M.
Mark Stoops (Kentucky): ~$38M.
Jonathan Smith (Michigan State): ~$33.5M.
Billy Napier (Florida): ~$21M
All the centers they’re cutting add up to less than $7 million in spending.

UNC athletics budget is $185.4 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
What a time to decide to learn less about the world.

Notable that this is justified by “the chancellor’s priorities,” just like how the White House fetishizes “the president’s priorities.” In both cases, the cult of the dictatorial CEO. No respect for expertise. No sense that an executive is a temporary steward of long-term democratic commitments.

If you live in Virginia's 23rd House of Delegates district, please vote for Sef Casim in this Tuesday's snap "firehouse election". He's running to regulate data centers much more than his opponent, and I can vouch for him, as he's a former umwdems student of mine. #MaryWash.

You might not be in Middle East Studies. But whether you picked this fight or not, if you work at a university, this fight is picking you.

You are responsible for standing with colleagues. You are responsible for failing to stand up too. We're all in it now.

From Israel to ICE, MESA’s academic freedom is under attack
The issue of academic freedom, particularly related to Israel and Palestine studies, has become a daily concern for students and professors.

In my experience, the youth today are better informed about this issue than the older generations relying on legacy media outlets.
Hillary Clinton blames TikTok and “totally made up” videos for young people’s views on Israel and Palestine.

She says social media influenced “not just the usual suspects” but also “young Jewish Americans who don’t know the history and don’t understand.”

In a few minutes, it's #GivingTuesday.

Local non-profits are competing against slick fundraising efforts with lotteries with cars & houses for prizes. Against orgs with endowments and property portfolios.

This holiday season, consider supporting a local cause.

LSU could finance roughly 40 faculty salaries -- or buy one solitary football coach. Y'all decide. At this point, not sure which institution is more gullible -- U.Chicago investing in krypto, or LSU investing in Division I ball of foot.

Check out this 2017 political ad. It was pilloried at the time as "Shameful anti-Guillespie campaign ad by Latino Victory Fund." Seems fairly prescient in 2025. How'd they know?

It's already been shown that specialists who rely on such tools gradually become less sharp at such cancer detection themselves. In the long term, do we trust "the machine" (writ large, controlled either by a tiny sliver of oligarchs, or itself) to actually tell us what it detects?
We could save soooo many lives but people are so caught up in their reactionary moral panic nonsense
