"We should be exceedingly clear: There is no crisis in Chicago that requires the National Guard. To the extent that there is civil instability in Chicago it has been caused by Trump’s surge of federal agents into the city and their lawless assault on the citizens of Chicago."

NEW: "I don’t like sending out 'emergency' newsletters, but I’ve had my eye on the situation in Chicago all day....This moment has elevated the crisis so that it is no longer just a conflict between the federal government and a state, but between two states."

The comic is FULL of excellent lines and visuals, but this one is exceptional
A screenshot of the Oatmeal comic, featuring a colorful meal on a plate with emojis around it, the text reads: "Someone once told me that art is like emotional nutriton. That made sense to me. Art feeds my feelings (accompanied by a smiley face and sad face emoji). And if thats the case, consuming AI art is like eating styrofoam"

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Opinion Science is back from its summer break, and I'm happy to share this conversation with @dbroockman.bsky.social.

We discuss why it’s so hard to predict which messages will work + the gap between political insiders’ instincts and what actually resonates with the public. (Links in comment)

My new op-ed with @lkfazio.bsky.social:

Trump sent a 'compact' to our universities. They should reject this devil's bargain.
Any institution that yields to these broad and intrusive demands would forever be subservient to the whims of the government.

Brilliant arguments against universities joining the so called “compact” in this oped from @lkfazio.bsky.social and @brendannyhan.bsky.social

Moreover, giving preferential treatment to submissive institutions would undermine the excellence of American science. To reach goals like curing pediatric cancer and developing better treatments for opioid addiction, we need to invest in the best research ideas, not divert support to weaker studies from universities whose leaders traded away their independence for cash. Government funding should reward scientific merit.

We do not deploy American forces against Americans in our own cities.

Our military is not trained for domestic law enforcement.

It’s illegal and un-American.

At the New Hampshire Telephone Museum in Warner, NH. Their slogan is “live free and dial”
A display of more than a dozen early telephones, most of the wooden coffin style with separate ear and mouthpieces, and external bells. A display of six telephone headsets from the mid-20th century under the heading “Around the World”. All six feature a separate base and handset, and are made out of black Bakelite. An early coin operated pay phone from the late 1800s. It has a separate ear and mouthpiece, and slots for coins in the wooden base A large telephone switch, reaching almost to the ceiling. The sign reads “please remove foul weather gear before entering the switch room.”

It’s a core First Amendment principle. This is utterly lawless behavior, for which there will be no (short-term) consequences.

That he does it so casually, as they are walking away, in front of cameras.

Rightly confident in his impunity.
“[t]he freedom of individuals verbally to oppose or challenge police action without thereby risking arrest is one of the principal characteristics by which we distinguish a free nation from a police state.”

…at around 430pm he was moved into a van and it wasn’t until they were out of the facility that he was told he would be released at a local gas station.

The stress and trauma of the day were unimaginable for our family and friends.

And knowing this could happen to an elected official…

…him being tackled to the ground and arrested by ICE.

He was never told why he was detained. He was never charged. He was never allowed to see a lawyer. He was never told if he was being detained by ICE or by the FBI, both of whom were present.

He wasn’t even told he was being released...

Juan was observing the situation at the ICE detention facility alongside other elected officials. He was in a designated protesting area & was standing peacefully when video shows

I only have a second rn but: For the uninitiated, Zeteo is a new media company, a startup from former msnbc host Mehdi Hasan. One of my rolling stone editors and I came over to help scale up the political reporting / scoops operations. It is, in my humble opinion, one of the most exciting news…

I like your work, but what the heck is Zeteo? Would you mind taking a few minutes to sell us on it? Who’s running it? What are they trying to do? Why is it so great?

The ICE agents deploying these are people without necessary training, those who couldn’t cut it in police training or didn’t want to join the military.

They are in this to hurt people and play Call of Duty on our streets, deploying chemical weapons on our neighbors as if they’re pressing L1.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America
