we should change egg to faceless furby

It's a furby with its face ripped off! According to Julie Blair, who designed the cover, this is what Maria thinks James H is

This is world changing information, Cat! I'm even more sad I don't have an original copy now.

okay but what exactly is that little cat thing on the original cover of "Nevada?"

I'm oscillating between being tiffed that The Beauty tv series adaptation apparently isn't going to include the trans hitwoman from the comics and beyond grateful that we're spared from watching her be adapted by Ryan Murphy.

It's not always the full class that objects, but I've never taught the story without at least one student making a thing out of it. It's infuriating.

Actual student quotes:
"This was perverted."
"It felt like I was reading porn."
"I was uncomfortable with her debauchery."

This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.

Someday I'd love to be able to teach "The Husband Stitch" without a student getting more upset over the sex scenes than the misogyny.

The Haunting of Hill House feels like a distinctly trans femme novel to me. Eleanor is so grateful for the chance to finally be a woman on her own terms that she'd rather run straight into hell than even consider returning to her old life.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

very cool that if you are working on behalf of right-wing culture warriors, you no longer need standing to have your claim adjudicated by the supreme court
tomscocca.bsky.social
It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all
tomscocca.bsky.social
One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

Supreme Court: of course states can regulate, and restrict access to, medical procedures if there’s a compelling public interest

Colorado: (bans conversion therapy for minors)

Supreme Court: no not like that, we only meant abortion

You could just talk about Jim Crow. I promise you, there's no need to leave America's shores to talk about life in a fascist state

Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.
Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.
