Hearing older folks try to legitimize the idea of video games to each other is one of the weirdest experiences.

They usually cite:
1. Age ("x series has been going since the 80's)
2. Popularity ("millions of people play/love it")
3. Revenue ("x has made so much money-")

Two of the most common climate misconceptions I see, even among knowledgeable folks, are that (1) most people aren't worried about climate change, and (2) if they were, they'd act.

Not true! Data show (1) most people are worried, but (2) they won’t act if they don’t know what to do-and most don’t.
A map of the world showing how levels of worry in most countries are greater than 70%. Source: Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, International Public Opinion on Climate Change, 2023.

Have never listened to @thewaroncars.bsky.social podcast, but followed them on Bsky because of urbanist mutuals like @nerd4cities.bsky.social , @ohtheurbanity.bsky.social , etc.

After seeing 10,000,000 posts, I have finally broken down and preordered Life After Cars. Very much looking forward to it

This dovetails with another paper I co-authored — featured by the incredible @nerd4cities.bsky.social — covering how the amazing urbanism of Seattle's South Lake Union hides a built environment that serves surveillance.

This is what corporations want. Just like they killed trolleys and put us in cars. Capitalism is predatory by nature and we are its slaves.

crazy that the reds are gonna sweep the dodgers to advance to the national league divisional series where they will sweep the phillies to advance to the national league championship series where they will sweep the brewers to advance to the world series where they will sweep the guardians

This is such a crazy way to describe safety advocacy groups like hey bro you're being REALLY aggressive right now about not getting hit by cars
bikegridnow.org
Put "well-organized and often aggressive" on our tombstone www.chicagotribune.com/2025/09/24/m...
Johnson is also surely aware that his progress on bike lanes will be a key benchmark for the many well-organized and often aggressive bike safety advocacy groups that have pushed for a “bike grid” throughout the city, some of whom pushed for a lower citywide speed limit that Johnson remained neutral on and aldermen in February voted down. Indeed, the mayor tipped his hat Tuesday at their push to redesign roads.

“If there’s a group in Chicago that advocates on behalf of anything, it’s the people who are advocating for bike lanes and bikers,” he told reporters. “Your advocacy is paying dividends for the people of Chicago.”

As he rode, Johnson said his Transportation Department is working toward “an ecosystem” of bike lanes that encourages cycling and makes people feel safe. He cited the need for a “strong grid.”

I finally cleaned up my messy cablework
2 skeletons, on left with veins, arteries, lymph nodes as they are in the body; on right with them being represented as straight cables like in the arranged neatly next to each other like in a server room

The implicit argument here, that pedestrians and cyclists are at fault for their own deaths, is REALLY problematic. So many people are killed in crosswalks and sidewalks, if they even exist! I'm sorry, but wearing a helmet will not save you if a 6,000 lb. SUV blows a red light!

This may seem cute but if you do this too much the cyclists may become reliant on cars feeding them, disrupting the delicate roadway ecosystem

My thoughts:
-I love that multimedia popularity is legitimizing video games
-I think a lot of people still don't understand that the appeal of video games is interactive storytelling
-I can't wait for more people to think of video games as an art medium rather than just a wasteful hobby

They couldn't specify what genre game it was, and were both hesitant to express interest in the content. They commented on how Japanese composers make good music for the games and apparently people love it.

A friend of mine who's retired does choir in Cincinnati and was talking to another guy his age about practicing for the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert.

The guy didn't know what a Final Fantasy was, which led my friend to try to explain what it was and why it was beloved.

i read this years ago and never looked back. it just sucks that the people sounding the alarm were drowned out by cowards.
Laurie Penny tweets: 'Virtue signalling' is a cowardly term used by people who secretly worry that their beliefs and actions are unethical and don't want you to make them feel bad by behaving differently. Don't fall for it. Nobody should feel ashamed of trying to do good in the world.
