This is hands down my favourite #SolarFlare in recent years, an event from September 2024. The flare persisted for several hours, giving us a jaw-dropping view of ‘coronal rain’ (seen in the yellow structure) and ‘supra-arcade downflows’ (seen in the cyan structure). A beauty!

I read this (extremely good) piece a few months ago and went back to listen to The Wall for the first time in years, paying attention to it much more carefully than I have done before. Highly recommend reading it.

"Things happen" sometimes, like when you walk into an embassy to apply for your marriage license while your bride-to-be waits outside, but then you get bonesawed to pieces for having exercised freedom of speech as an US-based journalist and have to be carried out in a series of suitcases.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

I was watching some YouTube today and was being served AI slop ads for medicinal honey, blueberries, and other kinds of snake oil, featuring fake astronauts, doctors, moms, etc. Seemingly there's no regard for truth or credibility.

More than that. "The FBI ***recorded*** Tom Homan taking the money "after indicating he could help the agents — who were posing as business executives — win government contracts in a second Trump administration."
Tom Homan was investigated for accepting $50,000 from undercover FBI agents. Trump's DOJ shut it down.

The FBI and Justice officials closed the investigation, which a Justice Department appointee had called a “deep state” probe in early 2025.

My 10 y.o. was telling me it would be cool if football players had mics in their helmets so they ask for a lateral or something. So I showed him the Randy Moss lateral and his eyes lit up. And I was like "yes it was exactly that awesome when I saw it too"

Six credible threats to his life.

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.

Let’s be clear— it wastes public money to NOT do it.

I just bought a 3 billion year old piece of banded iron formation rock because I read about it in Richard Fortey's fantastic book "Earth", which in turn I read because I was so floored by John McPhee's "Annals of the Former World."
I got really into spices (which has completely changed my cooking and eating habits) because I read The Devil and the Dark Water, a murder mystery that takes place on a Dutch ship coming back from Batavia in 1634.
Why do I know about how California saved the French wine industry? I read Tim Powers. Why do I know as much as I do about Emperor Justinian and the Byzantine empire? Because of Guy Gavriel Kay

Am I an expert in these? Absolutely not, but I know more than the average bear.

This my senator, someone who I had supported early on. Senator Fetterman, you must resign. Pennsylvania deserves better representation.
‘Fetterman went on to make statements that shocked people. In opposing a cease-fire, he said, “Let’s get back to killing.” A person who heard the conversation told me, “He said, ‘Kill them all.’”’
John Fetterman’s Struggle
The senator insists he is in good health. But staffers past and present say they no longer recognize the man they once knew.
