Mine show up at night, pairs of reflective eyes staring back at me from behind yucca. They’re cute at day and creepy at night - uncanny valley, adjacent to dogs but with a nightmare’s twist.
Today’s coyote sighting was far in the distance

cappellarecords.com/recording/lo... A piece written for a 14th century feast at the Hagia Sophia, not able to be performed since its conversion to a mosque, then put through convolution reverb with impulses from the Hagia Sophia to recreate what it would’ve sounded like

A miniDSP HTX, four Yamaha HS5 monitors, one nicer center channel speaker, and a subwoofer is enough to create an incredible immersive experience. Or a game like The Last of Us is deeply immersive.
One big piece of advice I would give everyone who can is to get a proper sound system. Even if you're only going to play streaming audio through it, the experience of hearing music filling the room is *infinitely* better than headphones, a laptop speaker or, God forbid, a phone speaker.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

the tension between the "this is not who we are" set vs the "this is exactly who we are" set (tabling the "who do you mean we" thing for now) i do think misses out on the "who we pretend to be" angle. i do think it's probably at least somewhat bad that we've completely stopped pretending

Is there any way to prepare chickpea pasta in such a way that it tastes good? What am I missing? Part of dietary recs from my long covid clinic, not since FODMAPs have I suffered like this. #chronicillness #longcovid

Wastewaterscan.org shows this trend for influenza A in wastewater - it seems to suggest progressively worsening flu seasons. They pretty explicitly state how they try to ensure year over year comparability for COVID, assuming similar rigor is applied to influenza A this is super concerning.

I always associate this song with the days after Christmas. Anyway, it’s also beautiful.

a general good rule of thumb for being a decent human is if you see someone doing something unusual and innocuous in public, assume they either have a perfectly good reason you're not privy to, or aren't having a great time and deserve compassion

The high schoolers working at the UPS Store are listening to Keane, the cycle is complete. (“Oh simple things…”)

I was nostalgic then for imagined simpler times, nostalgic now for very real simpler times.

Bracing myself to listen to this. The podcast does really good work, but obviously the subject matter of the book is way close to home.
Everyone involved in the publication and promotion of this book should be embarrassed. It's not a "harsh truth" that COVID mitigation was a mistake, it's ghoulish and false.

Man I’ve had some rough Christmases, but this one is up there. Dad come down sick, of course, admitting he was wrong about masking but insisting I won’t get sick. Trying to pretend like everything is normal.

When that girl died from ME/CFS recently - starving to death, begging her parents for help and getting hung up on, that really hit a nerve. Could easily be me if the cards had played out only slightly diff. This older generation consuming eugenics daily, in their news slop, they become monsters.

The news over on TikTok? A TikTok shop ad - yes, from TikTok, advertising their shop - was a swastika necklace. I saw it too. 200 people had bought it by the time I saw the ad. Vibe coding indeed.

You’ll sometimes read that mold is a good metaphor in that you have to address this thing that’s hidden and ignored. You’re in some toxic living environment and repressing whatever (yeah it’s kind of woo) and etc and you have to really acknowledge it and wrestle with it or it literally kills you

My request for a most minor accommodation for Covid caution - asking to get a meal to go, and not eat in a restaurant - have been met with blind rage, a phone being thrown across the room.

“It’s been five years, I’m sick of it.”

Oh, you’re sick of it? Symptom free, freshly returned from travel?

Indeed, and my experience adopting totally foreign social media environments (China) for periods of time.

I’ve pretty much concluded that politics are central to peoples’ character. I don’t know why I’d didn’t think that before. If they support abject cruelty to sexual and racial minorities - even if they have some fuzzy rationalization of criminality - that cruelty extends to their personal lives.
