My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.

“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

The reality is that you have to *demonstrate* that they're bad partners by letting them touch the stove.

And I'll tell you, the gyro that guy made ... I still dream about it. And the crazy thing is that the lamb wasn't even the best thing on the menu: the best thing on the menu was the halibut (which Pete had flown in whole from Alaska once a week to this dinky Central Illinois town).

The dogs were insufficient protection, so Pete also got a couple of llamas which, again, were trained to protect the flock against predators.

So... I grew up on an old horse farm in East Central Illinois. Across the road lived the proprietor of the Greek family restaurant in town. His name was Pete Poulos and he was, in fact, Greek.

Pete raised lambs for the restaurant. Occasionally a coyote picked off a lamb, much to Pete's chagrin.

What followed was a series of Wile E Coyote escalations to designed to prevent further attacks. On spring nights, when I opened my bedroom window, I heard all of this play out:

You can convince 1000 people to cut their meat intake substantially (25% or more) more easily than you can convince one person to go vegan.

yeah, i actually do eat a lot more vegan food nowadays because i have seen a bunch of recipes for vegan food online that look delicious

this is, IMO, a much more effective sales tactic for veganism

I think it is bad that incentives on this site lead large accounts to quote post it talking about how democrats are bad. This is a reflex we must recognize in ourselves and train ourselves out of because it is very easy to just do it and get affirmation for it every time.
