I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

I'm painfully tired of honey bees still getting the most attention when they're not native to North America. They're basically livestock and outcompete our native bees. We do NOT need more urban hives.

So please, let's some some of our glorious wild bees for a change!

An example of how dishonest RFK is: Vanderbilt had a very successful training program for neurodivergent researchers in STEM disciplines that had graduated two dozen Ph.D.s with autism, and was seen as a model for other institutions. Last week, NSF cut the funds and killed the program.
The full quote from RFK, Jr. is truly disgusting and this is 100% him calling for institutionalization of autistic people. This is horrifying.

the plan is to end American science research

all of it, no exceptions

other countries simply will not be able to fill the gaps here, this is just a shocking devastation of human scientific progress as a whole
The plan for NIH is in, source with full 64 page proposal for all of HHS is linked. Reported in WaPo. This is catastrophic. Reduction to 8 centers. 40% cut in budget. 15% IDC cap. This will decimate science across America open.substack.com/pub/insideme...

One of the things that really doesn't interest me about the current political moment is actually 'can we win?'

I mean, I think we can, but I don't care.

The weight of 250 years of suffering and striving propels us forward, it would do that even if the cause were hopeless.
bluesky can be a bit of a torment nexus sometimes, so the conversation with kristol and longwell is a bit of a tonic: this guy can be stopped and we can stop him. you can be clear-eyed about the threat and also a happy warrior.

For a second I was like where is this lunatic trash screenshot coming from and then I remembered that this is what they post on the official white house website now
The White House cites an NPR feature that states "banana slugs are hermaphrodites" as a reason to cease public funding of the network.

But banana slugs literally are hermaphrodites! Like that is just a scientific fact!

It's completely fair to speculate that things like anti-vaxxer cultural indulgences, & talk of needing a more masculine military are all expressions of this lack of perspective. Even Elon Musk pretending Polytopia is a smarter game than chess is part of this inescapable moral levity.
In short, we are governed by children. Even the Boomers had Vietnam, & the bad old days of the Cold War, now the closest thing to a harrowing experience our prime-earning generation ever had is COVID.

great energy at the hands off march in DC today. but also, in the thick of the crowd by the Washington monument, about 20 yards from a group of protestors energetically doing the 'no fascist USA' chant to some drums, a guy set up an amp and started playing Wagon Wheel
