There is an ambient feeling that this technology is rancid and costing us and while it’s nice to have numbers, the only people who think you can wave that away by lecturing people about burgers (a point I agree with) are abundance think tank guys who will never change their habits.

I know it wouldn’t be a panacea. But emptying the goon caves and getting their former occupants outside, meeting people from all kinds of backgrounds, and doing useful work would make life measurably better for almost everyone.

What’s your community building right now that offers you a sense of joy, pride, possibility, purpose?

Most angloids probably either a) what community? or b) literally bupkis 🤬

I was in Myanmar in 2015, just as identity cards were taken from Rohingya to keep them from voting. It was part of a decades-long process of redefining citizenship that ate away at their rights more every year. When governments start doing this, they can move the goalposts anytime they want to.
A reminder that most Americans who are life-long citizens have nothing OTHER than a Real ID to prove their citizenship. This is CBP’s chief enforcer saying that ID doesn’t count.
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

Unsettling phenom that’s still sloshing around as undercurrents in real estate/development industries is that relatively suddenly, no one can build with much more than 20-30 year time horizon on transformative disruption (climate, econ, etc). Generally, cheapo basic 🏡 need >50yr life to pencil out.

Really says something that there’s not a country on earth would take a second look at the US as potential hostile takeover bait now. Complete shitshow - why bother lol 👎

Car culture is the built environment and the built environment is car culture. Would help a everything from mass transit to urban density to sustainability if adults did not see themselves primarily as drivers first, pedestrians never, and bus riders only when punished by the state.
lots of people in this thread are saying "i don't want to send people to jail but i do want to take their licenses away" which i agree with, but i also think a lot of people would genuinely rather go to jail for a couple years than never be able to legally drive again

That's the thing I don't have a word for. Being convinced that the old is over, not coming back, and not actually very good anyway. Seeing the new off in the distance. And still not seeing the path from one to the other.

Even areas getting wetter may experience water shortage as the intense, sudden rainfall that climate change drives leads to flash floods + runoff which don't replenish groundwater.
