They are a *tripwire* force. Their deterrent value comes from the fact that they have standing orders to shoot at invaders. The US cannot count on a bloodless invasion and dead Danish soldiers mean a crisis whose outcome no one can predict.

I had an old post on Twitter about this. The US spends about 18% of its GDP on the social safety net and 3.5% on military. Germany spends about 24-25% of its GDP on the social safety net and 2% on the military.
