like how all the replies to this — "well what about the people who have to spend money to influence outcomes through informal means and can't rely on any mechanism of formal power or authority" — are just illustrations of the point

With $160 million in cuts looming, how many nonprofits will go under?

Some are still figuring that out.

San Francisco nonprofits brace for layoffs after budget cuts
San Francisco has long relied upon nonprofits to provide public services for less than the cost of city workers. Now, they're left out to dry.

JUST IN: ICE agents in San Francisco just now drove through protesters, used pepper spray, & brandished rifles at those who had gathered to try to stop an immigration arrest.

A woman, holding onto the hood of an ICE SUV, was thrown off.

A political movement driven by reasonable concerns about sports and medicine would have no problem admitting that trans people face discrimination. The fact that "gender criticals" constantly deny basic realities is sign 1,087 that they are in fact driven by bigotry.

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.

While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.

This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.

When a cabinet member announces "We are using the military to liberate an American city from its elected leaders," where do you go from there. What is left to say. The idea of that being anything short of a near-universal "Wait, what the fuck is going on" moment proves how far we've backslid.

I see toddlers cry about everything all the time, and I found it far more disturbing to see refrigerator trucks full of body bags outside of the hospitals…

But if a few people in masks start lighting stuff on fire? Then you have news. This creates an *enormous* attentional advantage towards the most violent and chaotic kind of protest.
