One of my more controversial opinions is that the US needs to significantly raise taxes to the tune of a couple % of GDP right now, even before any expansive social democratic reforms, and that means you—yes you, dear highly educated professional—will need to pay up, not just nebulous billionaires.

Is this one of the greatest scenes in movie history?

I think so — that’s why “It’s a Wonderful Life” is my all-time favorite.

LTNs: what the latest evidence tells us: that people living in LTNs reduced the distance they drove by around 6% more than those living outside them. Quieter streets make local journeys feel safer and more appealing on foot or by bike.

The reason they're so focused on trans teens is that people who transition younger typically blend into society better. To the extent that they're willing to tolerate our existence in society at all, they'd rather we be easily identified by our appearance/voices/etc.
Cis people really have no idea how it feels to watch a regime hold a press conference to admit, on camera, the pogrom against trans people they've been waging for 11 months is not only real, but they're going to double down on genocide and try to wipe out all the children first.

To all the car furries in my life, I offer you this video. See the light! I lived in Victoria for 6 years car-free and it set the bar for what good living feels like. So much bicycling. So cheap and good-feeling. The key is it has to feel safe and fun. Not scary.

Auckland Council and Auckland Transport from 2026 are looking returning streets back to the people. That is allowing streets to serve their purpose of being extensions of living and social interaction spaces.

This is excellent to see. Note, this applies to streets not roads. Big difference!

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

Do you find yourself in conversations with people who like to talk about how "they would never ride a bus" or who worry about "bus stigma"? I was just reminded of this 2017 article of mine, which tries to blow all that nonsense away. Hope you find it useful.

1. Missouri prefiled bills are in, and the anti-trans panic continues.

One even goes as far as to ban social transition in schools.

Any teacher who "supports" it, including name changes, pronouns, or "treatment," would be fired.

Even with parent permission!

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.
