Have made a few studies using ink in my new sketchbook, watching bulbuls, sunbirds, and flowerpeckers. Watching birds from my window and balcony soothes my soul and is something I anticipate each day. The occasional koel song is delightful to my ears. This year, it seems like spring is early, and my neighboring trees started flowering in full flow. Their bright colors are a sight to behold! The Neeru Kayi mara buds remind me of my childhood days of squirting them on friends, their powerful odor, color and the victims’ reactions are such days to relive again. Standing on the shore with back to the water is a snowy egret. The legs are spread wide and feathers are floofed out to the sides giving the appearance of arms hanging down. The bird looks our direction with a cynical glance. Who will draw first?

While hiking on the Craggy Gardens Pinnacle Trail, I came across this fallen tree which looks like an ocean wave frozen in wood - thus a timbertide. Craggy Gardens in North Carolina near Asheville is a popular spot along the Blue Ridge Parkway featuring a visitors center, hiking trails, scenic views, and a lovely mountain picnic area. Elevation of Craggy Gardens is 5,500 feet and since it is more than 3,500 feet higher in elevation than Asheville, one should be prepared for temperatures 10-20 degrees cooler than the city. In summer it is not unusual to be greeted by low clouds and fog, but if one waits a bit it will clear. The weather can change rapidly. Typically during mid to late June Craggy Gardens is covered in a spectacular floral display of pink and purple rhododendron flowers that blanket the trails and mountainside. However, this season the Catawba Rhododendron bloomed early in May. So by June only a few bushes of rhododendron could be found on the mountainside and none on the Pinnacle Trail. While no flowers were to be seen the trail was still a lovely lush green with lovely unique trees growing along the trail.
