In 2025, more than 10,000 STEM PhDs quit or were fired from federal jobs. That's 14% of the federal STEM PhD workforce, and 17% of STEM PhDs at 14 critical agencies. A huge loss of expertise and institutional memory, representing more than 106,000 person-years of experience.

the most rewarding thing about publicly reading a bunch of books last year was having people come up to me and go "you know I read such and such book from your recommendation and really loved it." It's something we've lost as reading becomes less frequent & the variety of books continually increases

On the theme of, "American planners regulate the wrong things," we should have much stricter regulations on noise-proofing apartments. It's the sort of issue regulation is meant to handle: it's difficult for most consumer to assess it before making a decision, and it really impacts qualify of life.
4-plex going up a few blocks from me. Gonna see about getting a showing when it's done. If we can see 2 adjacent units at the same time I'll bring a lil Bluetooth speaker to test the acoustic performance between units.

There aren't offset studs between units, so I figure it will perform poorly.

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

Also in here: DHS responded to the faith-led protest yesterday, calling participants “violent rioters” and “imbecilic morons” who need to “get a job.”

Asked about the statement, one UMC pastor who participated in the protest told me: "This is our job." religionnews.com/2025/11/15/a...

This reflexive stupid belief that normalcy will kick back in is a huge part of why we are where we are. We get the future we build.

this is why ending the filibuster is good
“if you elect Republicans they will actually pass and implement Republican legislation” is a sentence that should be banal but everyone smart understands is an extinction-level scenario for the party as it currently exists

I think this helpfully confirms the notion that the end of the filibuster was a big motivator for the eight Dems.
Heaven forbid the Republicans get rid of the filibuster…

My son Seamus died 15 years ago today. He was killed by a careless driver in a crosswalk.

He walked at 9 months, almost as if he knew he wouldn’t have much time. His favorite thing to do was throw rocks into water. He loved the moon. He called butterflies “buddy buddies.” I miss him every day.
