My essay in The Sun Magazine is a love letter to bereaved parents, my friends, and a dog named Shitter. I hope you will read!
Staying Tender
Listening to parents who are newly grieving, I notice the places where their voices break. It is not when they describe the concrete details of suffering and lifeless bodies; it is in the emptiness th...

I woke up mad but then I re-read yesterday's signal chat with my union buddies and it's so inspiring and hopeful and full of care/checking in on each other. I feel better now.

What do you make of the Oregonian's account stating tear gas was deployed after protesters "crossed the building’s property line and approached its security gate?" (not that it matters - I just question whether anyone actually crossed the line based on your video here)

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

Today I saw ICE gas little white kids in the streets of Portland with chemical weapons. Imagine what they're doing to brown and black kids in the detention camps

Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

At the Labor Against ICE rally. Peaceful protest, lots of kids, and tear gas. They are tear gassing children.

I keep getting questions about why my union isn't participating in the "general strike" I/we are 100% in solidarity with all of it but we just declared impasse and are headed for an actual strike over wages and benefits. Members are confused. Wish we would have picked a different word for today.
insisting on calling every mass day of protest or one-day boycott a "general strike" is not the move. it's good to see people rallying around the cause, it matters, but if you want to be part of a large-scale labor action that shuts down the gears of capital, start by unionizing your workplace!!!

Dems waffling on tax reform are accepting (among other things) $50M in cuts to my kids' school district. Kids are sitting on cabinets b/c there's no room for 40+ chairs, teachers asking for pencil donations. There is nothing left to cut! DO SOMETHING you absolute cowards.

There is something really special about ICU workers. They take care of very sick people and deal with distraught family members. Extraordinarily kind in my experience 💔

ODOT’s budget is fucked. They could either stop spending hundreds of millions on a doomed freeway expansion that is billions of dollars away from completion or raid the $15m a year program for sidewalks near elementary schools. Guess which Dems are choosing #orpol

This is so good and so sad. "Bewildered nostalgia" is how I feel as a reader, too. (also as a human generally)
When the AI slop summer reading list dropped last year I knew I had to write about making book lists. Thanks to @thebaffler.com for letting me go long with bewildered nostalgia & regret on 20 years of Internet book culture & how we made the slop book list inevitable. thebaffler.com/after-the-fa...
