Digital painting. The Roc is a massive eagle from middle eastern legend. They were said to be large enough to hunt elephants which is what this illustration is depicting: a solitary roc swoops down upon a stampeding elephant herd. The enormous talons of the bird are reaching for elephant at the head of the herd. They are the Darkspawn from the Dragon Age games, undead creatures resembling goblins and ogres, they are well armored, brandishing sword, axes and halberds, crowded together and staring you down like they are posing for a horrific club photo for the yearbook.

With all this chat about Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' I was wracking my brain trying to figure out where I'd seen a painting of a Greek ship being attacked by a sea serpent.

Of course, it's the Fighting Fantasy gamebook 'Seas of Blood'. Awesome work by Rodney Matthews.

Dragon Slayer (1984) by Nihon Falcom was an action RPG released only in Japan for PCs like the PC-8801. The 1985 port became one of Square's earliest published games on the MSX. It was also one of the first action RPGs in Japan, a genre it helped lay the foundations for. (a dragonslaying thread)
