🧵 During the pandemic we decided make five wide flowerbeds along the edges of our lawn. Our criteria was low $ and I wanted a lot of perennial color. I’d grown veggies for 15 years but my experience with flowers was buying assorted annuals and perennials in pots and crossing my fingers 🤞🌱

Catholics represent fewer than 20% of U.S. adults, however, they make up 61% of the population at risk of deportation. Trump’s immigration crackdown is disproportionately hitting Catholic communities.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

Good immigration policy must be grounded in two principles: security and humanity.

We can enforce the law and remove violent criminals while still upholding due process, human dignity, and America’s core values.

That balance is worth reflecting on this Christmas.

Publicly available government data and independent analyses show that the majority of people being taken into ICE custody do not have criminal convictions.

Many have lived in the United States for years, worked, raised families, and contributed to their communities.

Multiple government reports, court filings, and congressional oversight visits have documented serious concerns about overcrowding, medical care, and detainees’ ability to reach family.

Important questions remain unanswered about confinement conditions and whether basic rights are being protected.

I will always support the deportation of violent criminals who threaten public safety. But immigration enforcement must also be lawful, targeted, and humane.

This holiday season, tens of thousands of people are being held in ICE detention facilities.

And yet if you surveyed the general public, you'd find that most people think the country is more dangerous than ever.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.
