Top 10 games I played in 2025

10: Katana Zero - I enjoyed the time manipulation aspect and the side scrolling well enough, but it was the soundtrack that kept me coming back.

9: REPO - Playing this game with friends is such an amazing exercise in slapstick. I don't think a session ever ended without at least one fit of laughter from the whole group.

8: Capcom Fighting Collection - What can I say? It's the Capcom vs SNK games with great rollback. It's beautiful.

7: Peak - This one didn't have the same sort of slapstick appeal of REPO, but the cooperative hook really shines in a way that I wasn't expecting.

6: Echo Point Nova - We're never getting another Titanfall, but this at least satisfied my need for the parkour shooting that I loved about those games.

5: Sonokuni - An acid-washed fever dream in the vein of the Hotline Miami games all backed by Japanese hip hop. The world itself feels so alien that the anti-colonialist message grabbed me even harder than if it had been more grounded.

4: Final Fantasy Tactics - It's amazing how much everyone has copied this game, but coming back to the original article still satisfied an itch a lot of imitators still haven't managed.

3: No Man's Sky - I sort of played this many years ago on PS4, but never gave it a real chance. Coming back many years later, I have lost whole days to this game. The additions the developers have implemented to the game have truly reinvented it into something special.

2: Helldivers 2 - The game has still managed to keep me hooked without ever resorting to the sort of manipulative tactics you expect from most live-service games. I consider that impressive and worth celebrating.

1: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown - That's right. It's still top dog 6 years in a row, baby!

If nothing else, if not for the AV Club's Random Roles, there's a decent chance we'd never have had the opportunity for Curtis Armstrong to tell his story about working on the Gary Busey film "Quigley".

AV Club: Yeah, sorry for dragging this one up. But this was a movie where you appeared alongside Gary Busey, who plays a software tycoon who dies and is reincarnated as a dog. Busey’s such a weirdo force-of-nature that we have to ask about working with him

Curtis Armstrong: It was just what you’d imagine. That’s about the best way to put it. We were shooting this movie—which is a horrible movie—and he was supposed to come back from the dead. And he of course, Gary Busey, supposedly had done this—he’d been in an accident and died and came back. He showed up on a set made to look like Heaven, and he looked around and said, “I can’t play this scene.” They were three days behind at this point. But Busey said, “It’s nothing like this. I’ve been to Heaven and it doesn’t look like this. That sofa’s all wrong. That mirror is ridiculous. They don’t even have mirrors!” It was ridiculous. He was completely nuts about the design of Heaven.

But then on top of it, one of the guys playing an angel, had also died and come back. And this guy got into an argument with Busey about the way Heaven looked! The two of them wound up coming to blows and they had to send everybody home. So there you go. That’s what we were working with.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.
