They shot an undocumented man here on a busy street in the middle of the day.

They put “5 shots, 7 holes” (agents bragging words) in a Latina woman. Lied about the reasons. Charged her with attacking them then dropped it all.

There wasn’t enough outrage.

An official from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis told MPR News that armed U.S. Border Patrol officers came onto school property during dismissal Wednesday and began tackling people; they handcuffed two staff members and released chemical weapons on bystanders. “The guy, I'm telling him like, ‘Please step off the school grounds,’ and this dude comes up and bumps into me and then tells me that I pushed him, and he's trying to push me, and he knocked me down,” said a school official, who spoke to MPR News on condition of anonymity. “They don't care. They're just animals,” the official added. “I've never seen people behave like this.” The school leader said armed officers with apparent Border Patrol insignia on their uniforms arrived at the school in several SUV vehicles during dismissal on Wednesday afternoon. They broke out the window of a vehicle. “There's a car that got hit. I don't know how it got hit. They broke out the window,” the school official said. “Then different Neighborhood Watch, people, everybody, people, the staff in the school came out. And then they started coming on the property of the school and pushing people and tackling people and shooting pepper spray and pepper balls. And they handcuffed two of our employees.” Video shared with MPR News shows armed, masked officers with apparent Border Patrol insignia on their uniforms dragging a person on a sidewalk outside of the high school and tussling with another person as bystanders blow whistles and shout. The school official said some high school students were involved in altercations with officers. Many sheltered at a nearby library. The school is located about 3 miles from where an ICE officer fatally shot a woman earlier Wednesday.

This is the most complex morning. A lot happened last night in our home country, and we feel deeply ambivalent. We do not sympathize with Trump. We do not feel represented by him, nor do we feel fully represented by any political force involved in what is unfolding. We are worried about the human cost behind all of these international political moves, strategies, and ideologies. It is hard not to question the motivations behind U.S. intervention, and to believe there isn't a darker, self-serving interest at play. At the same time, we do not support the Venezuelan government. We left our country because we were in deep disagreement with the way things were being done, and because staying became unbearable. We do not want to silence the voices of our people who are feeling relief or joy today. That feeling is real, and it deserves respect. But something doesn't sit right. This does not feel like an ending. It feels like another uncertain beginning. We are afraid of what comes next, of the instability, of the collateral damage, and of how many lives may once again pay the price of decisions made far away from them. We believe deeply in the idea of a free Venezuela. We love that idea. We long for it. But we have serious doubts that true freedom can come through foreign intervention, especially from a country that has historically benefited from the suffering of others. And while we live in the United States and acknowledge the privileges and opportunities we have here compared to our people back home, we do not feel free here either. We stand with our people. With their grief, their hope, their joy, and their fear. We refuse simple narratives for a reality that is anything but simple.
