Discworld QOTD, from Snuff

"You should look for those who can’t believe that the law would ever catch them, who believe that they act out of a right that the rest of us do not have. The job of the officer of the law is to let them know that they are wrong!"
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight

"Witches knew that mysterious omens were around all the time. The world was always nearly drowning in mysterious omens. You just had to pick the one that was convenient."

I'm not sure I've ever seen anything with a larger disconnect between the executive class and the general public than AI - there have been cases where executives want to push something they know is unpopular, but on AI it's like the backlash hasn't penetrated their bubble at all
What gets me about executives at movie/videogame studios being taken aback at consumer backlash to AI is that they seem genuinely surprised that we like the human beings that make the things that we like

The Internet was never perfect but it used to be usable, functional. I know how we got here and I want the old Internet back. I want forums back. I want personal sites. I want stuff not written by a machine. I just want shit to work again.

this field biologist does a great job highlighting the insidiousness of AI editing

these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous

this is worth sharing and educating people about

The mainstream media just failed a basic civics test so badly that you'd think their brains have been pickled by the kinds of folks who spend all their time on X (oh, wait…). Headlines across major outlets are breathlessly reporting that Donald Trump "blocked states from passing AI laws" with an executive order. Except, that's not how any of this works, and anyone who stayed awake during middle school social studies should know better.

People are going to die because of the pending insurance premium hikes. I know the terrain of discourse is inconsistent and goes through a tumble cycle every 24 hours, but I really think we need to hone in on this reality and drive it home for people.

Much like with the War on Drugs, the push for AI is not about what they say it's about.

They say the War on Drugs is about keeping us safe, it's actually about mass incarceration and racial subjugation.

They say AI is to make our lives better, it's actually a Trojan horse for mass surveillance.
all the fake AI trash really contradicts one of the main ways we're told capitalism operates, with capitalists identifying wants/needs & developing products & services to meet those. turns out you can skip that step & just pretend. nigh everyone hates AI and it makes no money but it's everywhere

Not to defend Olivia Nuzzi, who broke every rule in journalism and promoted a charlatan to his current position. But it's incredibly telling that she will lose her job, but RFK Jr. gets to stay in his job despite the reports of his drug use, his affairs and his defenestrating of public health.

If you spend decades undermining a liberal arts education, you get college students who can't write a decent essay. But you also get adults who can't recognize a decent essay and sincerely think the issue is the beliefs and not that reading this is painful.

you have to be able to look bad faith in the eye and say absolutely not, even if that bad faith is coming from the highest levels of government

if you can’t, you do not - in any meaningful sense - have an institution, and all the kids who go there will learn is to weaponize bad faith themselves
this is just rank cowardice, the student very obviously disregarded the instructions and the assignment to antagonize her peers and instructors and provoke this exact reaction, society simply can’t function when the people in charge scurry like kicked dogs every time some troll bully says boo

This is why OpenAI is selling so aggressively to education at all levels—they want to create entire generations of users incapable of reading, writing and thinking without ChatGPT to hold their hands

And teachers and professors should call this out for what it actually is
To bear out this rosy projection, HSBC assumes that OpenAI will become "as ubiquitous [...] as Microsoft 365" (345mm users worldwide) while bringing in 10x the number of users (3bn).

Does the BBC think it's improper for a speaker to state their opinion that Donald Trump is the most openly corrupt president in American history?

Because I think almost all historians would readily agree that Donald Trump is the most openly corrupt president in American history.
BBC censors a lecture removing author’s remarks on Trump that refer to him a the most openly corrupt American president.
