This piece is a great illustration of how the long-term effect of Trump’s destruction of US institutions won’t be felt in a dramatic market collapse, but rather in permanently worse economic conditions, and lower prosperity.

DHS "recently announced the end of TPS for nearly 4,000 people from Myanmar, many of them persecuted Christians. Starting in January 2026, the US government will deport them back to a country run by a military junta that has been bombing churches and treats Christians as one of its domestic enemies"
US bombed Nigeria in what Trump says was an effort to protect Christians.

Violence in Nigeria is widespread, not anti-Christian specifically, and the US strikes won't accomplish anything lasting. But it appeals to his evangelical base even as he persecutes other Christians.

Everything is chaos, lies, and further humiliation of our once great country.
Trump Nigerian air strikes don't line up with his claims.

"Analysts say that the terrorist group in Nigeria with the best documented links to the Islamic State is in northeastern Nigeria, on the other side of the country from Sokoto State" (where the airstrikes happened)

Wait, after all that, he brought it down to what it was under Obama? That's it?
271,000 people have lost their jobs and federal spending has ctually increased. So people get less services, while we added debt paying for private jets for Kristi Noem, bulletproof cars for Kash Patel. This is what the rust belt voters demanded.

🧵🧵🧵 7 questions for the Trump regime about the attack in Nigeria:
1. Is it now official U.S. policy that Christians under attack anywhere In the world will be defended by our military?
2. Will only Christians in trouble spots overseas get U.S. protection — not Muslims, Hindus or Zoroastrians?

The last 24 hours have seen some of the most dehumanizing, disgusting posts of the year. This reporting is about internal comms from the team that makes them. The things they were instructed to show are horrifying, but the things they were told to remove or de-emphasize are even more revealing.
We read thousands of internal ICE chats. They show how officials make raids go viral
Thousands of internal ICE messages show how its public affairs team has coordinated with the White House to satisfy Trump administration demands for viral arrest videos

So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.

Americans will spend the next 20 years paying the price - a market of last resort for Trump's petrostate oligarch allies whose oil reserves would otherwise go stranded.
It's funny how us parochial Americans generally seem to perceive that the EV revolution is stalling or reversing when in fact it's accelerating rapidly worldwide. 25% of cars sold globally in 2025 were EVs!

NYT shows how Bari Weiss really screwed this up.

She didn't attend any of the 5 screenings of the story, which began on Dec. 12.

She only first weighed in on Thursday, and the show incorporated her suggestions.

She then waited until weekend to ask for more edits.
