OpenAI, one of the most prominent AI companies in the world, just released a model trained BLATANTLY on stolen IP.

It's obvious that rights are being violated, and it's also obvious that existing enforcement is not preventing these violations: they press onward.

The EU must enforce its rules

We should stop using the term "translating" when we are talking about what automatic translation systems can do. What they do is processing texts (to try and replicate it using words from a different language). Translating is a human ability.

In Spanish, the snack or bite you have between meals is tentempié. It literally means 'keeps you standing'. Isn't language diversity beautiful.

In Swedish, a word for what you eat to bridge the gap between meals (or while waiting for the main course to cook) is stödmacka. It means "support sandwich."

A similar word in Norwegian is ventepølse, or "waiting sausage."

When they say ai is a time saver what that often means is that it’s a tool that makes it easier for you to waste someone else’s time.

We have it as a contract point that translations of my work have to be performed by actual humans, I think actual human readers deserve to have actual humans translating and making the works as excellent as they can be regardless of language

Reading so much here about skilled, deeply experienced translators being reduced to much-lower-paying machine translation post-editing (MTPE) — fixing a first-round AI translation.

Reminds me of the tremendous labor + frustration of *undoing* a bad copyedit (whether performed by human or machine)
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

It never ceases to amaze me that every AI implementation on any platform seems to boil down to just two types of user interaction: stealing them, i.e., users are never asked for consent. forcing them to actively resist, i.e, users must actively fight to avoid being exploited.
All deeply unethical.

Además, vamos a actualizar nuestras condiciones. Consulta las novedades y cómo gestionar tus datos.

As a former translator, the crucial thing AI will never be able to replace is the ability to discern specific personal or cultural meaning in a person’s choice of word or phrase, and incorporate that depth and richness of meaning in the translation. This applies as much to court as it does to poems.

And to add, it has happened at lightning speed. Talented colleagues who specialize in their field have been made jobless within the past two years. Language has been handed over to big tech.
bcmerchant.bsky.social
Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:

And that's really one of the biggest issues I have with AI: it trivializes everything and turns it into “content” that is “good enough,” turning everything into a worthless mush; just stuff to fill our (work)days. AI killed everyone's capacity to care about anything but the bottom line...
