I have stumbled on a cure for despair: set up a bunch of advising appointments with first-year PhD students.

Overall I was blown away by how mature and healthy they are. Motivated, empathetic, and brave enough to show vulnerability. Sure they’re anxious, and weak on time management, but who isn’t?

We are not going to form a social consensus until we know what we believe in and then put our tits on and go get it. Get a fucking rudder and put it in your hand.

We don't have a social consensus. Criticially think your way into understanding where you draw the line, and then don't give an inch.

I'm gonna shamelessly cherry-pick this quote:

"Despite understanding themselves as critical thinkers, reactionary centrists are conformists at heart. And they are so unmoored in our current age because, increasingly, there is no social consensus for them to conform to."

That's it right there.

People were *big* mad about banning indoor smoking. People were *big* mad about seatbelts being mandatory. People are always gonna be mad about something, if you're not willing to make people mad you're never gonna get shit done.

Some of y’all really fell for the okie doke of treating “wokeness” as a slur and turning around to tell marginalized communities to STFU because according to you fighting for our rights was “identity politics” and costs votes.
Now look you got the military on the streets like Pinochet

when I worked in an independent bookstore, the owner told me the most stolen book was one about getting your first period and if I saw anyone walking out with it, I should just let them go.

Does anyone care is almost never the right question. People care. The issue is that people don't know what to do.

How did BBC Firth/Ehle Pride and Prejudice AND Ang Lee / Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility AND Root/Hinds Persuasion AND CLUELESS all come out in the same year?
And how can we get back to 1995? The definitive Northanger Abbey adaptation has yet to be made

Dude if the Democratic Party has a place for anti-trans and anti-abortion candidates then I’m not a democrat and I won’t vote for one

I don’t know what to tell you man, there’s already a political party who believes these things

It’s not a “big tent” to have zero fixed values in pursuit of power

Off the loom this morning - saltmarsh. Mother yarns are handspun Shetland, and the tresses are from the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Herdwick & Nth Ronaldsay handspun in the sky.

A small tapestry of a Scottish saltmarsh, about 20cm wide and 25cm tall. The marsh in the foreground is yellow-green shot with shades of russet brown, with a loch behind reflecting the sky. Hills rise behind the loch under a grey sky. The piece is an exploration of colour and an attempt to capture the wild beauty of Ardgour. It’s also an exploration of weaving technique as I prep for a larger tapestry.
