it’s sort of incredible to me that vance has apparently decided, of his own free will, that it’s his job to be even more viscerally unpleasant and personally charmless than spiro agnew, and that he seems to sincerely believe this will one day make him president

And here we see the problem that always dooms personalists regimes. You need competent people to do your crimes. The unflinching loyalty of a bunch of idiots will only get you so far.
And so we get this, where it's clear they're trying to do a cover-up, but are doing it SO BADLY that they can't create any plausible deniability.

So the question “what, like you think he cares?” is inapposite. The question is whether *you* care. I think you should, which is why I bother.

FOUR REPUBLICANS just signed the House Democratic discharge petition to force a House vote on the Hakeem Jeffries bill to extend health care tax credits for 3 years: Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Mike Lawler (NY), Rob Bresnahan (PA), and Ryan Mackenzie (PA). Gives it the required 218 signatures. Huge news

A major victory for Hakeem Jeffries, vindicating his strategy on health care through the multiple vying discharge petitions and on the government shutdown. And obviously an epic defeat for Mike Johnson, who basically left these Republicans in vulnerable seats no alternative but to join House Dems

Ahmed was then shot in the leg and shoulder by another terrorist. He’s being treated in the hospital and expected to be OK.

One way the shutdown deal might actually help Dems

Dems have an opportunity to claim they saved SNAP and other government programs, which could help repair the party's image as one that fights for working people

A plurality of voters approve of the deal to end the shutdown. Democrats have an opportunity to claim they saved SNAP and other government programs, key to repairing the party's image

The RIFs language is actually great. Not only does it rehire the people RIFed during the shutdown, it makes it an unequivocal Antideficiency Act violation to do ANY MORE RIFs through the duration of the CR (Jan 30)

Completely stops Trump/Vought Phase 2 for now

Would love to see this standardized

particularly when axios is reporting it and no one else — not even politico — is.
Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.
