all news i hear about the UK is like "supreme court has ruled that the 'trans people can use the bathroom' act of 2007 states that trans people can't use the bathroom. as a result, businesses nationwide are considering abolishing public bathrooms entirely in fear of having to enforce this ruling"

Clearly shows the harms that have multiplied by our collective failure to condemn nationalism and the idea that political communities are defined as “nations.”
From the right-wing Manhattan Institute's focus group of Gen Z conservatives -- just jaw-dropping stuff. We have a very sick society. www.city-journal.org/article/manh...

it is 'funny' that the question of 'why does everybody feel different about the economy than the way these graphs should indicate' never seems to account for 'a pandemic exposing thousands of people to our ramshackle and hyper expensive healthcare system AND killing many partners, roommates, etc'

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

I am convinced in the future we will look back and realise the sheer unimaginable folly of letting a virus that can cause immune dysregulation and cognitive dysfunction in humans infect and re-infect the global population over and over again. Worse still, that we encouraged it.

While it's gotten very business class popsci ("thinking fast vs thinking slow") I do repeatedly find a sharp distinction among many people between heuristic/rule based thinking (eg where they follow a code & respond to things) and overall-evaluative tradeoff thinking. Deontology vs consequentialism.

We do not need to elevate immigrants and use them to diminish others.

We need to abolish the distinction that nation-states make between "citizens" and "migrants."

This is an old, ruling-class/state strategy designed to divide us so we are too weak to stand up to exploiters and oppressors.
JB Pritzker: “We’re a nation mostly of immigrants — that is who we are fundamentally at our core. We ought to always be that, it’s what’s made our country great — Immigrants are the most entrepreneurial. Immigrants are the most grateful & patriotic”

Or we could dismantle the privileges that the state guarantees to capitalists, which is why billionaires exist in the first place. A wealth tax is a bandage a gaping wound
"For the first time, a majority of Americans believe billionaires are a threat to democracy. A remarkable 71 percent believe there should be a wealth tax. A majority believe there should be a cap on how much wealth a person can accumulate."

I think it's straight up evil to keep kids offline and restrict people's ability to engage with the wider world. The Left needs to articulate a positive case for the internet because too many people have bought the lie that our problems come from being too connected and free.

Wherever there is a powerful state with a monopoly on violence, fascism is only an election away.

Partner is on the tail-end of their illness. Won’t call it yet but so far I’ve got no symptoms. Which is incredible because we’ve cohabited that whole time, I’m immunocompromised and on immunosuppressants too. Masking and filtering your air works y’all.
My partner has been sick for three days now and I’m glad that the 3 covid tests (1 of which was a pcr) and 1 flu test came back negative, but I’m on immunosuppressants and nervous about any potential infection! Masking all the time and isolating and running air filters. Wish us luck 🤞😷
