Watcher of films and TV. Reader of books. Player of games. Drinker of teas. Spent nearly 20 years in America but bailed after 2024. Rather worried about those I left behind and spend far too much of my free time staring at the car crash that is the US gov.

Always a bit fascinating when people say there's no news about something, and all it reveals is they don't read the news because multiple news orgs are, in fact, bloody covering the topic.

As I've said, Yanks fall for it at least once a year. I suppose it'll be more now as portions of the GOP jump ship. Mostly, pols on the left (what few exist in America) get single chances, while pols on the right have endless chances.

People lining up to celebrate MTG or other GOP castoffs despite the damage they’ve done to vulnerable groups and democracy just shows how much they desperately only want their lives to remain the same and are more than fine sacrificing anyone and everything to get there.

Well, it's as they say: Everything is bigger in Texas. Including the cemeteries, one supposes.

I worked with a woman who left the state after it became staunchly anti-choice. She expressed frustration that she knew many liberals who refused to vote in the state.
A growing body of research indicates that Texas's restrictive abortion bans have negatively impacted the health and lives of Texas women and babies in multiple ways. Across the board, pregnancy outcomes and complications have worsened.
What researchers have discovered about maternal, infant health under Texas' abortion laws
In the more than four years since the state of Texas significantly restricted access to abortion, medical researchers have been studying the health effects of that policy change.

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with these guys? Why do you want to cede ground to the right on treating masks like this weird thing you should make fun of?

If someone’s still masking in public: They have their reasons, so mind your own goddamn business.
Disappointed to see Jon Stewart & co joke about masking in public. I do it for my medically fragile daughter (Batten Disease). People not masking properly led to her getting pneumonia, which led to her being on life support, which led to me getting price quotes on her cremation just in case.

Seems a generous take, really. Hard to say if this will change anything on the ground, but it will continue to erode what little coherency remains in American law. The more convoluted, confusing, and contradictory the rulings across cases and courts, the more fascists have loopholes to exploit.
Kavanaugh goes out of his way to pen a footnote not having to deal with the case at hand.

He appears to be trying to narrow the forces he unleashed with his prior opinion allowing for race- and ethnicity-based #KavanaughStops

Excellent news for Washingtonians.
BREAKING: I support a Millionaires’ Tax on income over $1 million a year.

The fairness of our tax system ranks 50th. Let’s make this historic change this session.

This is a separate proposal from the budget I announced today — revenue would not be realized until 2029.

Bari Weiss lied in her memo. She said segment didn't report administration's legal justification (it does in the very first sentence) and didn't say how many detainees had been charged with crimes as opposed to just those who were convicted (it does). www.muellershewrote.com/p/watch-the-...

There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

People should keep complaining. The best sources featuring the best journalists are paywalled. The worst "sources" featuring the worst "journalists" are free. New media cannot be run like traditional media without the methods contributing to ignorance and fascism.
[preparing to get screamed at] I think I officially don’t need to know if you’re mad that an article is paywalled. Perhaps that can be an Inside Thought
