In a strange position where I think there are massive, massive social harms to the proliferation of AI (misinfo, deepfakes, predatory 'companions', surveillance, labour rights) but also feel the mainstream arguments against it range from unconvincing (water) to actively harmful (copyright; "soul")

Speaking as a site publisher of twenty years and a forum moderator for ten years before that, it's impossible to devise a moderating strategy that will be fair across the board, keep all of the platform's user's safe, and remain utterly consistent in all cases.

then everyone gets mad about centralized moderation decisions

Harassing the mods into banning someone has never worked. And harassing people in general has never changed their mind.

The "liberals have to learn how to live with people we diagree with" line kinda stops making sense in a world where the central disagreement is whether disagreeing with them should be allowed at all
“We are under invasion from within, no different than a foreign enemy, but worse—they don’t wear a uniform.”

This is the President of the United States, who ordered the entire leadership of our military to sit and listen to him, speaking a few minutes ago.

copyright is not a property right. it is not a moral right. it is a government-assigned monopoly designed to "promote the progress of science and the useful arts." it is entirely, 100%, a policy question.

It is actually nuts that even when the NYC political establishment was presented with a broad field of talented candidates w/ many ideas, in a time of generational change & anti-corruption, they STILL chose to line up behind scandal-ridden Andrew Cuomo.

It’s cowardice.

The most useful part of standpoint epistemology is internalizing that other’s views are grounded in who/where they are rather than emerging form a vacuum, but this is often taken too far to believing you can’t make determinations about said views due to this, which is nonsense.

But why can the two metrics differ so much?

Why can the total fertility rate be misleading about the eventual number of births?

In this article, I explain how each of these metrics are calculated, why the TFR doesn’t always mean what people assume, and how to interpret it correctly.
Why the total fertility rate doesn’t necessarily tell us the number of births women eventually have
The fertility rate is commonly confused with the eventual number of births per woman. This can result in misinterpreting the impact of policies and trends over time.
