No, we have not "lost control of AI." LLMs are large math machines, meaning that changing something in training creates unforeseen after-effects. LLMs are not conscious or autonomous, and have no "control" to be lost. Comments otherwise are marketing.

“We've Lost Control Of AI” Let's start with a simple statement: Hank Green should be fucking ashamed of himself, because he put out a video titled "We've Lost Control of AI," which begins with several straight up falsehoods: "AI agents can now win gold at the International Math Olympiad" "Book your flight" "Code a functioning app from scratch." None of these statements are true. Hank, a guy who people love for being "nice" and being one of those epic bacon Science Guys, should know far better than to put out this drivel, referring to both OpenAI and Google's models "achieving a gold-level performance in the International Mathematical Olympiad" and then I assume not looking much harder than that. Per Scientific American: The latest models just got a good grade on a single test—as did many of the students—and a head-to-head comparison isn’t entirely fair. The models often employ a “best-of-n” strategy, generating multiple solutions and then grading themselves to select the strongest. This is akin to having several students work independently, then get together to pick the best solution and submit only that one. If the human contestants were allowed this option, their scores would likely improve too. ... Other mathematicians are similarly cautioning against the hype. IMO gold medalist Terence Tao (currently a mathematician at the University of California, Los Angeles) noted on Mastodon that what AI can do depends on what the testing methodology is. IMO president Gregor Dolinar said that the organization “cannot validate the methods [used by the AI models], including the amount of compute used or whether there was any human involvement, or whether the results can be reproduced.” AI cannot "code an app from scratch," unless you're fine with the app maybe not working or running. AI cannot "book a flight." Hank goes on to say that "development is too fast" because we "don't have a good understanding of how these tools work," only to go on to say "these tools have already been caught lying" and that catastrophe awaits according to "people working on models." He states, with authoritative vagueness, that "these systems can operate autonomously for hours to complete complex tasks that require reasoning and on the fly decision-making." Hank, ostensibly running a show about science, fails to do even the basic research necessary to say an intro without fucking stuff up, then immediately bumbles into quotes from the Center for AI Safety, a non-profit founded by two machine learning experts, one of whom (Dan Hendrycks) has the following part of his Wikipedia: He credits his participation in the effective altruism (EA) movement-linked 80,000 Hours program for his career focus towards AI safety, though denies being an advocate for EA. Hendrycks also created Humanity's Last Exam, a test of a model's ability to "do PhD level research." Had Hank Green, The Science Guy, looked this up, he might have also seen that around 30% of HLE's Chemistry and Biology answers are wrong. Hendrycks also wrote a paper about catastrophic AI risks which is effectively philosophy — and while yeah, I think it's necessary to think about this stuff, connecting it to modern LLMs is a fucking joke. One might wonder why Green believes we've "lost control" of AI, and the reason he does is because of the following: The CEO of Anthropic, the company behind the AI Claude, summed it up pretty well. He said: "people outside the field are often surprised and alarmed to learn that we do not understand how our own AI creations work. They are right to be concerned. This lack of understanding is essentially unprecedented in the history of technology." Green falls into one of the most powerful parts of AI marketing — conflating "intelligence" with mathematics, and ends up spending an alarming amount of time repeating things about Anthropic models "helping people make bioweapons," and that training these models sometimes has unexpected effects, focusing on the idea that sometimes tweaking an AI's behavior to "stop it doing something harmful" takes away some of its efficacy at tasks. I'm not going to dig into this video more, but I can simmer my thoughts down to two points: LLMs are giant math machines, meaning that tweaks to them will make other things happen, and the complexity of the maths involved is such that one change in one place might change another thing. Saying we've "lost control" suggests these models are doing things without the ability to stop them, conjuring up images of out-of-control machines versus "a very big maths box that we haven't worked out yet." These are the linguistics used to scare and upset people with AI doomerism. Instead of framing this as "they haven't worked out how to make these things do what they want," Hank Green chooses to help effective altruists pump fear into the ecosystem, making these models seem more powerful than they are or ever will be. These models aren't "out of control" in any sense. When you see stories about ChatGPT encouraging people to kill themselves, on some sick, twisted level, OpenAI wants you to believe it can't possibly stop this situation, that the models are "too powerful," when the reality is that OpenAI can (and should be legally compelled to) cut any conversation involving self-harm with harsh enough guidelines. It just doesn't want to, because it might reduce engagement, or might damage the mythos that these mathematical guessing machines are more than they actually are. Surely it would be perfect, right? Nope! AI is a terrible researcher. I’ve used everything from AI mode on Google to the most expensive generative search engines available for large hedge funds, and in 99.9% of cases I’ve found nothing new or interesting or novel. That edge case was one time when a search engine pulled up a single quote from an earnings statement. Once. One time. So, what do people mean by “AI skills”? Prompt engineering. They mean “how can you get this product that’s sold and hyped as a panacea for every informational problem to do the thing that it’s meant to do,” and the answer is usually “it can’t do it, but the way to get it close is to find nuanced ways to ask it to do stuff.” In a very real sense, “AI skills training” is actually AI training you — making you fill in the gaps, making you do the work that this alleged “intelligence” does.
