People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

There are a lot of derelict schools in the city that are close to transit, and a broad shortage of housing. I think there's a two-birds-with-one-stone solution here.

There is some *extraordinarily good* near-future espionage fiction happening in this thread.
They called them Near Abroad Direct Action Operations, NADA Ops. The "joke" in the CalSec cafeterias, which made its way out later in the hearings was that "What does the operator say when asked if there are civilians in the area? Nada...oops!". Even decades later, Arizona didn't find it funny.

Residents of the Loop, Chicago’s downtown area, live on average until they are 87. In the West Garfield Park neighborhood, the average is 67. (via @wbez.org)
There’s a 20-year life expectancy gap in Chicago. Many of these deaths are preventable.
West Garfield Park residents are expected to live on average until 67 years old, compared to Loop residents living to age 87. This is widest death gap in Chicago and the biggest gap of any big U.S. city, the most recent data shows.

If you want a sense of the kind of things Liberal Currents is willing to publish under its banner of liberalism, read my magnum opus that debunks the entire 'sex based rights' scam, where I reframe that idea as a battering ram being used against the very *idea* of human rights.

Have to say, @magic.wizards.com got me but good with the ATLA set. Kept going "that sounds familiar but I don't remember" looking at the cards, and now I'm halfway through book 1.

Bodes well for the in-multiverse TV show, I gotta say.

I think if Canada wants to have a strong cultural identity we need to go back to doing what we're best at, making the weirdest fucking TV shows you've ever seen

I was lucky enough to get on one for a commute home a couple times and I need non-CTA riders to know that it's decorated inside as well. I'm grinning thinking about it. It really is several tons of moving holiday cheer.
Colleagues and I were just talking about this: The CTA holiday train is the purest experience of joy in the city. -No one- is so jaded that they don’t light up when they see it. Commuters get genuinely excited. People smile and laugh and text pictures to their friends. It’s a delight.
Non-Chicagoans don't realize how fun it is to see the Holiday Train pulling into the station. A little jolt of joy gives you a lift.

Setting aside the "how many Americas are there?" question for a second, I guess I don't have a sense of how common/useful referring to a whole (couple of?) continent(s) by one demonym is? We talk about Europeans, but that has a similar issue of the EU. African and Asian have their own problems.
yeah this is exactly why USians continues to irritate me
Like it’s one thing for a group of people to say “I prefer to be called this” it’s another to TELL another whole country of diverse ethnicities and heritage that you will now be calling them something else.

What happens when you downzone?

Our new open-access research paper in @findingspress.org investigates effects of decades of downzoning in Chicago.

Findings:
—Downzoned areas added 1/7th of the new units as comparable non-downzoned areas;
—Downzoned areas became more white & were more expensive.

I need everybody to read this and understand what’s going on. These are spouses of US citizens in the country legally. They have entry clearance and green cards, they’ve passed background checks and have no criminal records. ICE is taking them anyway.

Well, if it’s 26 November, it must be the 139th anniversary of a divorce case so saucy and notorious it gave us the phrase “what the butler saw”, and newspapers suppressed some of the details of the domestic servant in question’s testimony because it was “unfit for publication”

Animated adaptation of the Terra Ignota series. Only way to do it.

Prestige Baroque Cycle series. Ben Kingsley as 1714 Daniel and Ferdinand Kingsley as Restoration-era Daniel.
