Some are saying this is the reason we were teaching essays in the first place!
Student told me that writing her research paper made her realize how many opinions she has on other topics that she should learn more about before having an opinion and this is one of the many reasons that teaching writing is important even if now that LLMs can create written products.

The fix for this is *hopefully* relatively simple: someone needs to sue Quebec over the pre-emptive legislative use of the NWC. And a transgender woman in AB needs to sue over the use of the NWC to invalidate the rights of women (which is expressly prohibited by the constitution).
The NWC has been a ticking timebomb in the Canadian constitution, and it's going off.

This is, far and way, the #1 thing I'm worried about with Canada moving forward; I don't see an easy way out of this for the country if conservative Premiers jam the NWC button every time they attack trans people.
Today is Human Rights Day. What a cruel and ghoulish thing to do.

Scientists at Canadian institutions have long punched well above our weight despite low and stagnant funding. Spending a billion dollars on external recruitment while science here is starving is exactly what Harper got wrong about supporting research excellence in Canada.
Canada’s new government is investing big to attract world-class talent in science and technology — and become an innovation powerhouse.

Apparently there were documents which were proven to be forgeries in court at one point because Calibri was rolled out in like 2007 or something and the documents were claimed to have been produced years before? I don’t remember the exact details, but Michael Stevens mentions it in a vsauce

After ChatGPT appeared to validate a man's suspicion that his 83-year-old mother may have been part of a conspiracy against him, he killed her. OpenAI bears responsibility for her death because the company rushed out “a defective product that validated a user’s paranoid delusions,” a lawsuit says.
ChatGPT spurred a 56-year-old man to kill his mother, lawsuit says
A new lawsuit against OpenAI alleges that ChatGPT encouraged a man’s delusional thinking, leading him to kill his 83-year-old mother and take his own life.

Quit caffeine. Quit sugar. Quit meat. Quit alcohol. Quit gluten. Quit carbs. Quit quit quit anything that gives you joy.

The health cult is just as fucking twisted and anhedonic as the religions it has replaced. This is just a new Puritanism dressed up in the pageantry of science and medicine.
Cafes across the U.S. are embracing the low- and no-caffeine lifestyle, with options that are a far cry from dusty tea bags and rewarmed decaf. nyti.ms/3XKlqoj

These must be purchased second hand from airlines because a single 737 is like $80M according to a cursory google search
The Department of Homeland Security recently signed a contract worth nearly $140 million to purchase six Boeing 737 planes for deportations. https://wapo.st/3KpFEkd

Absolutely hall of fame levels of refusing to reexamine one’s priors. “The moderate candidate will always do better,” unless the left candidate directly beats the moderate candidate in an open election, in which case “well this is a special case and this place isn’t like other places.”
like incredible takeaway from a huge overperformance by Democrats in fucking *TN*

Hey @hankgreen.bsky.social, @bobabria.bsky.social - love Focus Friend, thanks so much for making it! Is there a possibility of a deep focus update that allows music to play but keeps all other deep focus features in place?

Veritassium (I think?) did a deep dive into how turbine blades are manufactured last month and it is terrifyingly complex
Great read on the cumulative trillions of dollars of iterative engineering effort that has gone into developing the efficient, reliable modern gas turbine. It is an insanely complex technology featuring an unforgiving multidimensional tradeoff space

The thing that I find crazy about people who are bigots in person is that it *costs more* to do that. Like it takes more energy to initiate that awkward confrontation than to just not use a slur or misgender someone.

get the fucking vaccine
I had shingles in my early teen years. I cannot express to you how badly you do not want to get shingles. get the fucking vaccine.
All over my FB people talking about their bad experiences with shingles vax and dissuading each other from getting it! We need to give people real info on how to mitigate the symtoms caused by vaccines because vaccines are always better than meeting a virus unprepared. Yet drs aren't coaching ppl

This is exciting except for the fact it seems to have gotten Sabine Hossenfelder taking it seriously which means my skepticism is at maximum.

Also “almost no negative energy requirement” and “no negative energy” are wildly different things. Like saying it uses almost no unicorn farts for fuel.

Saw one of these on the road earlier today and I was struck that this is probably the most exciting, fun car Mazda made in the last 20yrs. They knew they were doing something special when they chose that colour.

Wish I was small enough to ever drive one (though I hear they have absolutely no balls)
