Happy feast to likely my favorite philosopher & theologian—muse to my soul. He’s far too unknown and his insight could help change the unhealthy view of God as the vengeful selfish penitentiary warden who needs repayment for sin. Why he is not on TEC’s calendar, I haven’t a clue. It should change.

I think one of the hardest things for decent people to understand is that sometimes folks just plain enjoy cruelty. You can not reason them out of this. There is no winning them over. So long as the permission structure to be cruel is in place, they will delight in cruelty.

I think one of the hardest things for decent people to understand is that sometimes folks just plain enjoy cruelty. You can not reason them out of this. There is no winning them over. So long as the permission structure to be cruel is in place, they will delight in cruelty.

None of the behaviour of Trump’s regime (glaring corruption, assault on democracy, facilitation of genocide, violence against immigrants, extrajudicial murders, etc.) surprises me, but it’s still shocking.
What both shocks & surprises me is the lack of a more robust response from Catholic leaders.
