31 Days of Horror, Day 1: "The Devils" (1971) - A cult/art-house classic that more than lives up to the hype. Sickeningly relevant look at the manipulation of religious hysteria. Visually stunning and unsettling. 5/5.

Absolute Martian Manhunter is a one-of-a-kind comic, and today, I talked with one of the big reasons why: its artist, @javierrodriguez.bsky.social.

We talked about his evolution, the collaboration on AMM, the importance of its colors, and more as we discuss varying pages from the series.
"I Want to Be Invisible": Javier Rodriguez on the Art and Collaboration of Absolute Martian Manhunter - SKTCHD
I’ve said this already and I’ll say it again: If any project defines DC’s Absolute line, it’s Absolute Martian Manhunter. Nothing expresses the potential and power of the line better than it, as write...

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

A page by the late Jorge Zaffino from his character Wolf. This is the page he gifted to Al Williamson when I drove Jorge along with Ricardo and Carlos Villagran up to visit Al in his Honesdale studio. The talent in that studio that day, along with Bret Blevins was staggering!

Right now, Dems are hiding in their offices, scrolling their phones fearfully, wondering "how are voters going to feel about the National Guard being deployed?"

The right, meanwhile, is vigorously *attempting to shape* how voters feel about it, filling every medium with coordinated propaganda.

I kind of feel like "don't talk about politics" as a social norm only further ensured poltical discussions would be disfunctional.

Like, if you live in separate media bubbles until Thanksgiving, there's going to be a blow up. Casual political discussion begets better discussions

If Hegseth resigns and we get an Acting Secretary of Defense, it'll be the eighth time we've had one.

One came under Nixon, a second under GHW Bush.

And then we had *five* under Trump.

Tsuru Aoki in THE DRAGON PAINTER. Aoki became a film star before the mass move to Hollywood. In the early 1910s, the American film industry had embraced authenticity, so hiring a Japanese performer to play Japanese roles was quite the fashion.

The industry would backslide before the decade was out.

begging mainstream journalists, editors, politicians to comprehend that we are fully in "mad king" territory and react accordingly. Look, I was also alive during the 1990s but THIS IS NOT THE 1990s and you all gotta stop trying to fit the round peg into that square hole.

It’s still hard to believe the simple fact that this is all self-imposed. Everything that’s happening right now wasn’t the result of some foreign adversary destroying the country. We did this all to ourselves by electing the dumbest motherfucker to ever rule a nation.
