Important point here: they are not firing public officials to save money - personnel costs are relatively minor - they want to kneecap capacity so that these agencies struggle to spend money. Its a back door impoundment.
Wondering why all the administrators got fired yesterday?
It's so there will be nobody to issue awards or negotiate contracts to undermine Congressional authority to appropriate funds for research.

Good day to remember that a US President has no inherent power over tariffs whatsoever. It’s not like war powers or pardons. It’s entirely delegated by Congress to deal with emergencies. GOP Congress cld modify that law tonight and bring this to a screeching halt.

So here’s why I’m glad there was no minerals deal: the cover story for it was that the US would recoup money spent for defense, but what safeguards were going to be in place to make sure the money would go to the actual US and not just to the oligarchs?

I can't think of a faster way to undermine the country than simultaneously firing government workers, cutting scientific research, rolling back protections on public health & environment, & cutting essential services. It's like the US was defeated in war and is being occupied by a hostile enemy.
