“At least 35 people died in ICE custody last year. That is not a failure of training. That is the manufacturing of premature death. And what we want is an end to that violence — however it’s dealt out, however it’s dressed up, however it’s defended.”
Tonight, I was one of more than 200 people who gathered on Chicago’s North Side to mourn Renee Nicole Good. Several people asked me to publish my remarks from the vigil, so I’m sharing them here.

It is a careful rhetorical line to walk to acknowledge that Trump has now realized all the worst fears of critics of Article II courts, while at the same time recognizing immigration court has long had rotten sham elements. As one example: children being made to represent themselves.
No Child Should Appear in Immigration Court Alone
While the U.S. government may provide pillows and booster seats for children who are too small for the chairs in immigration court, it doesn’t have to…

“Oh but if Democrats did that Republicans would just vote it down, wouldn’t convict and would rally their base to defend Trump’s crimes.”

Yeah, okay, make them do that then.

I mean, nobody loves a frivolous LOLsuit like these right-wing grifters, but still, you don’t have to give them the attention they want until they actually file the thing. The media splash is what they want most, and they already got it.

-who cares if administration figures “regret” sending people to CECOT
-who cares about the criminal histories of the people we sent to CECOT, we sent them to a torture prison
—who cares about the “debate” over the legality of sending people to a torture prison

So, one thing I noticed about WaPo's piece about Tyler Robinson is that the paper seemed to really want there to be some "look! he did it because he's pro-trans!" angle here, but there's just... nothing to back that up. And even if it were true, so what? www.washingtonpost.com/investigatio...

I’m here with my mash & cran listening to how ICE locked our cousin’s husband inside a New Orleans Home Depot last weekend. They closed the place down, locked everyone inside, and iced em, one by one. He is a legal citizen, an immigration process that cost 20k. They took him to jail.

Normal how? All the Democrats I know are normal. They’re decent, they support meaningful work, strong public schools, family integrity, affordable health care, prudent and fair taxation, value for tax money spent, racial & religious harmony, human dignity & human rights. Where’s the weird in that?

Whatever happens, the lifetime grant of power over the rule of law to a handful of people requires reexamination. That power, for the health of the constitution — or its continued vitality, to be frank — requires dispersal.
Now seems like a good day to push my plan to fix Court: sortition — with all but the chief justice (whose role is set out in the Constitution) relegated to the appellate courts, and an expanded set of 12 seats filled by annual randomized selection from Senate-confirmed appellate judges.
The Supreme Court has six right-wing hacks who don't actually care about the Constitution, and even after Trump is gone, a revanchist court will remain a threat to liberal democracy.

The very structure of the court — vesting unchecked power for life in a few people, and hoping they'll wield that power in good faith — has led to this crisis. We can't depend on civic virtue as some bulwark against the corruption that now runs rampant.
Yep, the Supreme Court really is just a House of Lords—a purely political branch with bizarre veto power, wielded capriciously and without accountability. Time for massive reform.

The dripping contempt the right wing SCOTUS majority holds for district judges is truly a sight to behold every time. When they deign to give actual reasons for their shadow docket holdings, it’s “look at the absolute idiots who keep getting everything wrong!”

As the district court noted, the Trump admin and Texas Republican lawmakers _said_ that they were acting on the basis of race. They said so openly and plainly. Are fact-finders in the lower courts seriously supposed to plug their ears and say “I can’t hear you”?
Texas clearly did a racial gerrymander, which is illegal.

A district court found that Texas did a racial gerrymander, rejecting the new map because it is illegal.

But the Supreme Court reversed it.

Because? Must assume the gerrymanderers were acting in good faith (despite the evidence otherwise).
